147 vs. 156 GTA - Catalysator

I have noticed that all 147 GTA are "EURO 4" emmission class and all 156 GTA are only "EURO 3" emmission class.

I have the 156 GTA and there is a stupid law in my country: I have to pay a 4,000 Euro "pollution tax" in order to registrate the car here - this is the tax for 3200 cmc Euro 3 vehicle. The tax for a similar engine but with "Euro 4" is much lower - around $1500.
And on top of all this there is a law project to triplate the tax for all E3 engines - so to register my 156 GTA would cost me 12,000 EURO!!

..my car is not yet registered so I was wondering what is the difference between the 2 engines - 147 and 156 GTA?? What makes one E3 and another E4? I want to know if i can modify my 156's engine (another exhaust/CAT or someting?) so it will meet the EURO 4 requirements, hence a lower registration tax for me to pay.

Help

The 147GTA & 156GTA both hve two pre-cats and two main cats.

To the OP (again) you can't make a Euro3 car into Euro4.

Re: 147 vs. 156 GTA - Catalysator

As I remember, they both have exactly the same emissions - therefore exactly the same set up.

The only reason the 147 is Euro4 and the 156 not is that Euro4 did not exist when the 156 came out. Looks like once a car has been classified, that's where it stays, regardless of being capable of passing the more stringent test.

The 147GTA & 156GTA saloon both have a CO2 reading of 287 g/km
The 156GTA Sportwagon is 293 g/km.
Parkers also list all 147GTA & 156GTA as Euro3

They list the GT 3.2V6 as Euro4 though, even though it has higher CO2 reading of 295 g/km
The 166 3.2V6 is also Euro4 & 297 g/km CO2

They are all Euro3 according to the Alfa CoC, which is required to register the car in most EU countries.
