Warning 147 Gta

hi just wondering if anyone can help????
i have a big problem with my 147 gta i was driving it last night and it broke down on me with a bang, smoke and a lot of oil. the engine was still running but it would not move. it was like i did not have it in gear. i think it might be the gear box. has anyone has had a simular problem? the car has only done 50k and has full alfa service history, and is on a 04 plate :-( i am very sad your heart sinks. i have it at the garage but am dreading the bill.
i would love some feed back if anyone thinks they might have a part to fix it, or has had a simular problem and knows how muh its going to cost, would also like to know if its a common thing, but the AA man did say he had never seen anything like this before, and i dont think he was on about the type of car.
all the best toast.

147 GTA Q2

Re: 147 Gta

hi, this sounds very much similar to what happened to mine. and unfortunately i had to put a fresh gearbox in. I really do hope this is not the case with yours but the symptoms do sound very similar.
hang on a min, i'll get you a link to my thread...........

Re: 147 Gta

Sounds like diff failure.. Pretty common on the 147 GTA, it can happen to any car with a V6 in. I've seen your car for sale on eBay by the way, looks lovely

Hopefully the diff won't have taken out the rest of the gearbox, but if theres oil it sounds like it. Ouch!

GTA gearboxes don't come cheap. You could use the gearbox off a 156 2.5 V6 but the ratios would be slightly shorter. You'd save a lot of money doing it this way, but come re-sale time if you told any potential buyer they might be put off.

Weekend toy: Alfa 156 3.0 24v V6, Silver with red leather, Q2 diff, GTA Teledials, headlights & inlet manifold, AutoDelta carbon intake, BMC CDA, decat pipe and SuperSprint rear box, FK coilovers, Dastek Unichip - my 245bhp beast!

Gone but not forgotten: Alfa 156 2.4 JTD Veloce, Vela Blu, Angel 'mad map' & BMC CDA, Ferodo DS2500s - the fastest tractor in town!

Re: 147 Gta

Where are you based? Any idea or where you are taking it for a repair? May as well put in a new clutch while the gearbox is out, and don't replace the standard diff, fit the much stronger Q2 diff instead.

If I were you, I'd ring AutoLusso in the morning and ask to speak to Ned (01525 221921). He might have a spare GTA gearbox kicking around, he had loads of gearboxes when I was there last. If you are anywhere near Bedfordshire then I could recommend no-one else to do the work for you, I travelled there from York and back, 380mile round trip for them to replace my standard diff with the Q2, I give them 100% for value for money and workmanship. They have a truck and trailer so could recover you, if you are close-ish. Thats what they did with Nicky on here when his diff went in his 156 2.5 V6.

No probs mate, just so sorry to hear about news like this when someone gets a major failure..

Uttoxeter is about 100 miles from AutoLusso.. I'm sure Ned would trailer that for you cheap enough if you wanted them to do the work. But that would all depend on if they have a GTA gearbox. Maybe Bacon used their last when his went? Anyway, it'd be at least worth giving them a call, Ned is a true Alfisti and will help you out in anyway if he can.

Sorry to hear you bad news matey. Thats near Alfreton isn't it? I am a frequent visiter there. I have just had a Q2 in mine collected it a week ago on friday well worth it. If not just for the prevention of your current dilemma for the fun facor! Just got to get my cam belt done, only done 25k on '04 but reading other threads and knowing my luck.........

Mate if you are at 50k on the original cambelt you need to do this AS SOON AS GOD-DAMN POSSIBLE. You are indeed living on borrowed time, I would not even be starting that engine until the belt and tensioners (and waterpump - you need to ensure the one from the GTV 3.0 V6 is used) are changed. Sorry to sound a bit over the top but do not hang on until the 72K interval, we see so many early breakages on here it is unreal, mostly around 4 years of age or 40k miles. This seems to be the safe limit for GTA engines.

May as well get all the work done at the same time. Yes, it'll be a big bill, but afterwards your car will be mostly sorted for another 3/4 years, so maybe re-consider selling it, and spend a bit more making it into a blinder (do a forum search for 'supercharger' )

Nah my GTA goes down to Royston. I deliver to the Co-op depo there in my lorry. Regards the cam belt as i said mine has only done 25k but is 4 years old and seeing as i have just spent £1100 on it doing the alternator, Q2, service and mot its probally going to go wrong sooner than later. You no how it goes!
