help!!

hi guys i need help, i've been told that my gearbox on my 147 gta is dead admitedly i was ralling it. I pulled away off the lights and it just gave way, pulled over to find fluid leaking everywhere, initially i thought it was the clutch as the gears could still be selected but the dealer has just told me that the gearbox is toast, been quoted 3grand! for a new box but there must be another way, or a reconditioned box somewhere, i got engaged on the weekend and if i tell her how much its gonna cost i wont be!

Re: help!!

Sounds like the common(ish) problem of the diff failing and the failed bits smashing out of the gearbox casing.

You can get an exchange gearbox direct from Alfa (somewhere around £1000 for the box + labour).

Re: help!!

if my responses seem a bit random i'm still trying to figure out how to reply incorporating quotes from multiple members any way the latest so far is that my local dealer has told me that the diff exploded and then the bits went through the gearbox (hats off to david c) the subsequent gearbox fluid then leaked on the clutch and knackered that too, they have now presented me with a bil for £4000!

I've spoken to ned at autolusso he reckons he can fix the box but thas not gonna be cheap either, i owe my dealer about £700 for the labour to take the gearbox out, then i've got to ship the car out to ned and see if he can fix it i suppose the box is out so that should keep the bill down on that side.

Can't fin a used box anywhere on e aby or ata breaker was even tempted to put the 2.5 v6 but to my better judgement i decided against it.

The only saving grace is that i bought the car from veloces last june and the car came with a 'platinum warranty' i think the max they pay out is £2000 but u knw what these dodgy warranty companies are like, if they put the £2000 towards the job then i'm gonna put the rest in and have everyrthing changed, i asked about the Q2 but my dealer said that they wouldn't do it!!

156 GTA Q2 SW

Re: help!!

Hi - just picked up on this thread - the very same happened to me, my diff went through the box - oil everywhere.

My repair was covered under the Alfa Warranty - and I did pay the dealer to fit the Q2 - see the link below

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-...on-my-gta.html (Sounds like the Diff has gone on my GTA)

How can a dealer possibly charge £700 to take a gearbox out? that is ridicules.

If you have a warranty with your car we would be able to do the work and claim on the warranty, you would have money left towards the total ridicules price you are being charged by the dealer for taking the box out.

It is quite common that the GTA diff fail, the Q2 will fix the problem, how can a dealer advise not to fit a Q2, just goes to show you, they don’t have a clue

147 GTA Q2

Re: help!!

Similar thing happened to my gearbox on my GTA, and my previous 156V6.
I cant remember exactly what i was quoted for a recon gearbox and fitting, but i think it was just over £2k to start with and then the quote went up to £2600.
In the end though, I bought a second hand GTA gearbox from Ned and got a local garage to fit it.
I think this is the most economical option by far, but second hand boxes are hard to come by.
Personally, I wouldnt bother putting a 2.5 box in, cos it not original equipment.

£4000? Are they having a laugh?

The £2000 that you are paying is more than enough to cover all that work. They are taking you to town IMO.

I agree with Joe, we would be able to do the work for you for £2,000 and bill the warranty company, I will also include a Q2. We would be rebuilding your box.

Dealers you got to love em

Re: help!!

Im not suggesting for a minute that £4k isnt a lot of money (cause it is!) but lets keep this in perspective here...

The alfa garage are probably quoting book times to remove the gearbox and driveshafts etc. Any independant will bill for either a set price based on their experience or by the actual time it takes so it will always be cheaper (plus their labour rates are less), but it doesnt mean the alfa dealer are 'ripping people off'...

Also when an alfa dealer replaces a gearbox they replace the gearbox. They dont do what the independants do and fix the old one - nothing wrong with fixing the old one (which usually involves welding up the very expensive case which is the biggest part of the cost when a diff takes out a gearbox) but compare apples with apples. £70-£80 worth of welding to your case plus the hours labout stripping it is always going to be cheaper than either a brand new complete box or a brand new casing.

Replacing the dodgy diffs with a Q2 is a sound investment though, and it is possible to talk the main alfa dealers into doing it as shown on this thread as the original diff is actually more expensive (list price) than the Q2.

good luck whatever happens, just chalk it up to unfortunately buying from those ******s at veloces
