Re: GTA for £4500
I know, But my point is that it is not unbelievable and someone could be easily fooled - This forum has not helped.
OA did not pay much more for his car and rubbed everyones nose in it plastering the price he paid about the forum and therefore to anyone with a slight interest. THEN someone started a thread stating that road tax pricing had devalued the cars again - This forum seems to be forcing the prices down!

To be fair I was shocked what I paid for mine, thus the reason I kept mentioned it. Plus in addition it was on ebay, and people had already picked up on it. But I have not seen another one even close to that price since. On average they are £7000+

Re: GTA for £4500
They should be going for about £6000 I say, no more than that, just because people advertise their GTA's for £10,000 doesn't mean that's what they'll get for it.
I don't think it's a case of prices getting drummed down, it's a case of that's the price they should be.
After all, and don't hate me, they aren't 'that' quick. They have 250BHP which is a decent amount of horsies, but it's only an extra 60BHP than a standard 2.5 V6 156. 0-60 is what in the 156 GTA? 6 seconds?
Top speed is about 155MPH tops yeah?
They are quick don't get me wrong, and they look amazing, but they aren't worth the prices people are wanting for them. In my opinion of course.

I guess it wasn't that much of a keeper after all,
The 156 TS now belongs to the missus,

Re: GTA for £4500
Nope, I'm solely going off stats and figures given, so clearly my view is not important. But a 250BHP 6 year old car sounds expensive at £8000+, that's the point I'm trying to make.
Of course if I drove one I'd be exhilerated and love it, and it would be quick, sound amazing, look amazing etc, it's an Alfa after all. But is it worth the price tag? Not sure, I'd say not.

I cant really comment on 156 GTA's but i think a £9000 residual value for a 2003 147 GTA with average miles is about right if you work on a 50 to 60% loss on list price over 5 years.
147 GTA - list £22,500 new - now around £9000
Golf R32 - list £25,000 new - now around £11,500

I'm sorry Darren, but what a load of tosh.
Its a bit like saying Porsche 964 RS's aren't worth 50k because they're old, and you can get a standard 964 for £15k. And all those 30 year old Ferrari's - surely they should be worth about £500 now...
ALL used prices are dictated by supply and demand - good old market forces. It
People are buying GTA's for £10k, so thats the price they're advertised for. Simple as.

Re: GTA for £4500
Sorry Darren, but all you're showing there is your over-reliance (obsession?) on stats.
You've plucked a figure of £6000 totally out of the air (I mean really, what's it based on?).
The actual value is based on rarity, cost new, depreciation rates, demand, and everything else that market forces take account of.
You can't just blunder in and say "Oh, it does 0-60 in this many seconds, therefore it's worth this much.
How do you cope with the fact that a Ferrari costs more than a Noble?
I think you're in danger of fitting the 'knows the price of everything and the value of nothing' cliche.

Re: GTA for £4500
Before the GTA - I drove a 156 2.5 V6 whilst I still had my 2.0 156 SP2 - Whilst the 2.5 was quicker, made a great sound - it was not as balanced and as much fun (to me) as the 2.0 that I had. When I tried the GTA - I was totally blown away - it's so different and special - once you have driven one you will understand why they should cost even more than £8k.
I do however fully understand what you mean about a six year car at £8k....
As we are seeing here and OA is demonstrating - he got his for a steal and was in the right time / place - however is now about to start spending on the car to get it just right That car will end up costing about £7k.
Now as we are using the OA GTA as a benchmark of how cheap a GTA can be.... what if the car was the same age, had only 30k on the clock, was perfect needed nothing doing, had 330's etc.... and was being sold for £7.5 - £8k. You could still purchase an AA warranty for piece of mind, and there really is not much in it.
Above £8k for 2002 GTA, I would expect it to come from a main dealer as new!
Now what else can you buy for the same age / money / exclusivity / prestige / spec.... in my mind only the BM 330i comes close and then they are not exactly exclusive!

Re: GTA for £4500
As an example of the alternatives, I just decided to have a look for a BMW 330i (231bhp) on Autotrader (don't worry, I'll empty my cache and page history afterwards to avoid embarrassment )
Looking for a 6 year old, so 2003. Average mileage or less.
Cheapest I could find was £10,750. Most expensive £17,000
And £8000 is too much for a 250bhp car?
But this is just arguing on your stats-based terms Darren, in fact it's irrelevant.

I applaud all the Gta owners who are defending prices, however Bmw and Alfa are not in the same league (IMO) for retained value. That is in the main great news for 'us lot' on this forum who appreciate the finer things in life.Just my thoughts.

Re: GTA for £4500
Rossogtv - you are undoubtedly correct, but that's exactly my point - you can't base a cars value on the bhp figures, otherwise the Alfa would be better than the BMW for depreciation - which clearly they are not.
However, I'm talking about current value, not depreciation there. I would guess that the BMW which is now worth £12k cost a hell of a lot more than the GTA brand new too.

I am having to actually spend a fair bit on it to get it right. Suspected that the engine is timed up wrong at the moment.

Re: GTA for £4500
Bazza, agreed, you won't get an argument from me.I actually think that this forum is perhaps the cheapest way to aquire a gta as people do seem to under value their car if anything.Take a look at the 156 for sale currently an 03 regd, advertised at £7499 thats an asking price....

Eh!!!
I don’t get your point
All cars will depreciate at a similar rate regardless of what it is.
A £10,000 base ford mondeo at five years old with average miles and good nick will cost you around £3750 now; just like a £45,000 m3 will now cost £17,000.
That equates to around 40% of its original value in both cases even though they are not directly comparable cars.
Thus a 147 GTA costing £22,500 new is now worth £9000 - £10,000 or 40 - 44% of its purchase price.

Re: GTA for £4500
Alfas used to be know to depreciate as quickly as they accelerate!
However the new models (Post 159/brera GT) seem to be doing better than the 156 did.

Re: GTA for £4500
Heres another generalisation but one i do believe is true.Almost all German sports cars will hold more value after 3 years than the comparable Alfa.Does this make me want to rush out and buy one(German car)the answer is no.I have taken alot of stick at work and generally for buying italian cars over the years, but hey i'm thick skinned......or just thick !!

Re: GTA for £4500
I would say that the statement would have to be something like:
Most cars depreciate at a broadly similar rate.
To be acceptable.
Certainly BMWs have a reputation for holding their value better than Alfas.
