issues...

Hi there. My first post on this site - so go easy.

My GTA Sportwagon (2002) has a couple of issues, which hopefully you helpful technical guys can help with!

1. When cruising along in 6th, the gearstick involuntarily jerks back and forth from time to time. It moves about an inch each way. Does not happen in any other gear and is fine when accelerating?? Any ideas?

2. Rear wiper keeps seizing. Is it best just to replace motor - freed it up 3 times now in last couple of months?

3. The "computer" which tells you mpg etc does not work. Pressing the button on the end of the stalk does nothing at all - not too worries as not sure I want to know the mpg...

And finally, and possibly most worrying...

4. When engine is started from cold, a definate blue oil smoke out of the exhaust. Clears within say 2 minutes. Valve seals?

Thats all....! Any help with any of the above would be really appreciated!

Many thanks

Alfabeat
1.Rear wiper, had a sportswagon myself, a couple of years back had the same problem. Purchased a new motor from Alfa, sorry can't remember the price best try EB Spares first, it took about 30 minutes to install, very straight forward, and never had another issue.
2.Gear lever, sorry cannot really help with this one, read a few reports regarding this with other owners on the Forum.
3. Faulty stalk, think I would just replace with new unit, may work out to be cheaper. I very rarely use mine, like you I'am not interested in mpg.
All the best !

Re: issues...

Rear wiper fixed. Took the motor out and removed spindle which wiper attaches to. Rubbed down with emery paper, cleaned up, re-greased and works a treat. It was very corroded and seized solid - took some bashing to get spindle out. Will lube every month from now! Wish dealer had bothered to do so!

Re: issues...

Hi and welcome

Keen to hear about the gearstick movement - mine does the same but does not move as much as 1 inch more like 1/4 inch.

I think I once read that it might be an engine / gearbox mount ????

Re: issues...

If it is any help, my gearstick jumps forward and back slightly when in 5th gear when you go on/off the throttle. It has done it since new, and personally "I aint bovvered", to borrow a phrase

Re: issues...

ok , now i am not very technical at all and can someone please tell me if i am talking s**t or not , but i am sure i remember hearing someone say that on a V6 , oil can lie or get trapped somewhere in the engine ( i cant remember where , possibly the valley) , but when the car is started from cold it burns this oil off and soon disappears and is totally harmless. This could be total rubbish but its just a theory , i am sure someone can correct me on this .
oh and as for the gear lever movement , i had a lot of movement in my Saab gear lever when i accelerated sharply or came off the accelerator quickly and i found 2 of my engine mounts were totally shot.

At 10,000 rpm , no one can hear you scream.
