What's it worth - 156 GTA SW - 53plate - 41k miles

Would appreciate guidance from those in the know! What do you reasonably reckon a 53 plate GTA Sportwagon in red with 41k mile on it stand when purchased from a dealer?

Standard car, no fancy extras, good nick for the age.

Dealer in my opinion is off his head with what he reckons its worth but before I disclose this I really would welcome an informed judgement.

trade is nowhere near what they actually fetch. got a 52 gta myself and quite regularly cap it at work, if I went of the figures for trade it would be 5k-ish with 70k on clock. yours would probably come back about 7.5 - 8.5k tops, but can quite easily check tomorrow!

how close?

Why do you say that....when in recent weeks GTAs seem to have entered free-fall thanks to the VED issues & rising fuel costs, courtesy of Mr.Darling. 52 plate saloons with average miles (50-80k) have been selling on ebay and pistonheads for £6-8k.

Damian, would appreciate if you would check....your 7.5-8.5k is miles off what the stealer is after. On the basis that your values are trade in, I could accept a minimal premium to pay the stealers wages, but if your figures are right this one is taking the proverbial and trying to retire early.

I say that mainly because I have one, and I want the prices to remain as high as possible!

But some points to say I'm not just pulling the figure out my ass:

Damian seems to have misunderstood the question, and is quoting the price the dealer would buy from you (which is rock bottom) not the price the dealer would sell to you (which is right at the top)

eBay is where you would expect to pay the absolute minimum it is possible to pay, from a private seller. It's going to be VERY different from a dealer price. Pistonheads is the same, although not to the same degree.

53 plates are worth more than just a years difference over 52 plates because of the brake upgrade, and general perceived better build quality over a new model car.

You're comparing saloon and sportwagon prices - don't. The sportwagon commands a premium due to its desirability and its scarcity - only 104 sold in this country.

Judging from Mitch's response, the actual price it's selling at is £10.5k - well there's your reduction due to fuel price etc.

By the way - I wouldn't expect dealer prices to start to drop yet because of the road tax increase next year. There isn't enough public knowledge of it yet. I'd bet any money that they're reducing what they'll buy cars for though!

10.5K seems about what you'd expect from a dealer ...couple of grand over private sale price.....

Re: What's it worth - 156 GTA SW - 53plate - 41k miles

To let the cat out of the bag.....dealer looking for £11.5k. Obviously will deal on that but I do feel he is more than slighty off course with that opening offer....I have it booking on Glass's at 9795 retail.

Nearest mileage available 39,000
Price when new £27,975
Retail value
Garage/retailer's selling price £9,795
Trade-in values
Clean Condition £7,475
Average Condition £6,725
Below Average Condition £5,975

Am I wrong in my opinion or do I need to wise-up?

Any comments?

Re: What's it worth - 156 GTA SW - 53plate - 41k miles

I had found this and jumped to the wrong conclusion

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/ALFA+ROMEO+156/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-4294967221-4294967222/advert.action?R=200816308116931&distance=175&postc ode=LS22+7QY&channel=CARS&make=ALFA+ROMEO&model=15 6&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

11.5 seems too much. 10.5 maybe

Half wrong, half right. Glass's is terrible with low volume cars, not worth the paper it's printed on. Neither is any other price guide really. The only think you can do is keep an eye on what they're actually selling for.

No reason not to try to knock him down though. I doubt you'll get much off it. Dealers know how scarce these are, and that therefore if they're willing to wait for the enthusiast buyer, they'll get top price.

I'd say if you can knock him down to £11k or less, be pretty happy with that.
If you want one cheaper, you're probably going to have to go private.

Just look on Autotrader for the truth of the matter.

There are 3 (count em!) SW GTA's for sale in the entire country on there. Prices ranging from £10.5 to £13k.

Now look at saloons, and see just what a price premium there is on the SW.

Good one Bazza....very logical explanation.....guess I am going to have to forego the thrifty Aberdonian blood in me and bite a few bullets.....

Beats me though 'cos I know I'll get shafted on the trade in on my own jts SW. Pay over the odds and recieve under the odds.....there has to be a better way of buiying cars......

That's the problem right enough, they screw you both ways

When I part-exed my 145 QV they gave me above book price because it was in such good nick, obviously much loved, etc, etc.
They even showed me the book price (in Glass's, naturally). Gave me £1800 for it.
Put it straight on their forecourt at £3500 with no work done, sold it in a week

Is it possible for you to go private? You'll sell for more and buy for less.
Of course it's a lot more hassle.
