Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
Ummmm...???
Just a quick daft question from a Alfa Newbie....
When driving around town at speeds below 40 MPH I have noticed my 156 GTA is sailing past 90degs to roughly 95ish....and gladly the fans kick in.
Is this right??? I'm not really used to having a car that gets that hot in such a short time. Sometimes from cold the car can be up to these temps in around 10 minutes of normal driving.....is this okay my fellow Alfa Friends ???
PS: I'm still having squeaky probs with my bloody brakes Mr Ned !!!

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
Sounds about right ... my 156 2.0 TS would do exactly the same ... driving along the motorway would be about 75deg ... stop start would be about 90-95, when (sometimes) the fan would kick in ...
also in the winter I used to turn the car on, go back in the house, and by the time I'd had my breakfast (I eat quickly) it would be nicely defrosted and ready to go ...

Not in my experience. My temp rarely gets to 90. On my 156 2.0 when this started to happen it pretty quickly got to the point where it wnet past 95 and headed into the red and I found out the rad needed replacing (core gone). On my GTA, the rad core was starting to go when I bought it (53K) so I had it replaced. So check the rad core and see if it's starting to crumble.

Be a little patient. Mine took nearly five weeks to lose all squeaking. It reached the point where there was a bit of squeaking once they warmed up (weird, they were quiet when cold but then squeaked a bit under light pressure when they had warmed up a bit) but that has all gone now.
Cheers,
Nigel

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
Just took the car around the corner to National Tyre's and asked them to clean the rear discs and pads up......When I collected the car I was told that one of the N/S/R caliper pins had seized ???? Would this be causing brake squeal ???

Well, I'm not technical but it sounds a likely cause.....

The squeak is usually caused when one of the brake pads is slightly stuck on. There are a number of reasons this can happen, the most common being the brake pad becoming stuck in its slider. This is due to a build up of corrosion on the slider. The best solution is to remove the whole unit, take out the pins and rubbers that the calliper attaches to and then clean it up with a wire wheel. Once the carrier's sparkly new, give it a quick coat of paint and reassemble, making sure you use grease on the pins and copper grease on the sliders and make sure the pads move freely in the carrier.
The noise is the new pads on the discs IMO.. If the noise doesn't go away in the next 3/4 days then I have just the remedy.

We did not look at there rear brakes when your car was at my place as it was not making any noise when it came here, had a bacon sandwich instead
It could be causing the squeal, if it is I am sure that would be covered by your warranty, also if you rad is leaking that would also be covered by your warranty, you did get one with the car when you bought it didn’t you

Not at all. You will have to cook the brakes to hell to clear the discs. The discs may be glazed.

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
 AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH
I've had enough........my bloody brakes sound like a small child playing a harmonica !!!!!
Does anyone have any pad recommendation's ????
I'm gonna pull off the PF pads on the front and bin them....as well as the Magneti Marelli ****e that are squeaking like F**K on the rear.
It's nothing to do with bedding as the brakes have been on the car for 5 weeks and have done over 2000 miles.
Don't get me wrong the PF pads work really well...but I just cant handle the constant squeak squeal noises I get at low speed.
Ned I don't suppose you've got any other pad that you might wanna swap have ya ???
Ferrodo DS2500's ????

No one else is having a problem with squeal noise from the performance friction pads, if you are not happy with them send them back and I will give you your money back.
I can only suggest a full strip down and rebuild of all braking components, this won’t be done on a Saturday it will need to be booked in.
I have no idea what the problem is as both times you brought the car here it was fine

Yeah I know mate......I think the car must know it's in trouble when ever I've brought to your place and decides not to SSSQQQUUEAK !!!!!!!!!
I'm very happy with stopping ability of the pads....maybe I should bring the car in for a good sorting.
But theres still no guarantee they wont SQQQQQQQUEAK !!!!!!!!

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
Hmmm,
I have either the same or simular problem atm with my 147 GTA, I dont notice any difference running around town in temp. But as soon as I get it on to a streach of road. The water temp goes up to just under 100deg, the problem apparently is the v6 motor water pump has a plastic impellar which is known to failed and will cause this issue.
Check these

Well I had my brakes smoking this morning....and....it seems to have made a big improvement
There were still a couple of squeaks but no where near as bad as it's been.

You need to cook them until they fade, and then drive for a good 10-15 mins afterwards to cool them. I mean on 50+ roads too, not around town etc.

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
an Ex GTA owner told me to look out for this sympton as coolant flush/replacement was not on the Alfa service schedules.. meaning rads can gunk up and lose efficiency even fail in advance of when they should....

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
My GTA never gets to 80 let alone 90 degrees. I had to push it really hard up a steep hill just to get the needle to rise ever so slightly above 50-60C.

Re: Hot...Hot...Heat !!!
Her 147's pads never squeak in normal use. I say in normal use, as I sometimes allow the car to run backwards on a very steep incline, when they do emit a little grunt or two, when applied. To be expected as they are operating in reverse? I test the handbrake on this dramatic slope as well, and this works fine.
Temperature is up to 90deg after about five minutes or so of static running, and then sticks at this pretty much constantly when driving, so I guess the old twinny checks out ok on these two fronts at the moment? :
Not too sure about the slider pins/guide rods spoken about in the rear caliper? The fronts use this type of construction, but the rears? Mind you it is twelve months or so since I last did a full brake check over, so I have probably forgotten the design of the rears. Old, forgetful brain! Doh! :
