Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
Hi everyone, I am tonypony. I am new here. I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I came about this forum as I was curious to what car is quicker. An Alfa Romeo 156 GTA or a Honda S2000.
On my drive home today I raced against an S2000 from the robots. He was in front of me and could not pull away at all. But in 4th gear it was game over and I over took it with ease. I was then wondering if he backed down, or just his car was not that quick at high speeds, or a bit of both? The reason I am so curious is because a friend of mine wants to buy an S2000 and cannot stop raving about how quick it is.
Otherwise, nice to meet you all and happy chatting.

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
Well the GTA has similar performance figures 0-60 but the GTA's top speed is 155Mph whereas the S2K is 150.
I would suspect he eased off though.

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
240bhp in an S2000, 250bhp in a GTA, and a hell of a lot more torque.. But the GTA is quite a bit heavier, and FWD.
So I'd guess the S2000 would go ahead from the lights, but the GTA would catch it up once you got to really high speeds, as seems to be the case in your race

I'd like to mention that street racing is something to be frowned upon and I hope you didn't actually mean you "raced" the Honda, but just had a spirited drive, on an open road.

Well said. I too indulge in spirited driving all the time. The GTA does not allow you to drive any other way...
Tonypony welcome to AO bru, and the best thing about driving an Alfa Romeo in SA, the TSOTSI's don't come looking for you..
{For those of you who have not lived in South Africa, Tsotsi's = gangster = bullet in your head, if you act tough... and they love fast cars like BMW M3's and BMW 325is, especially the 325is, the official Gangster car in Cape Town,Joburg, Durban and East London ....igusheshe (Tsotsital for Hot Ride)!!}
I love and miss South Africa!!!

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
Over 70 mph the GTA pulls away smoothly as the speed increases.
At my local track there seemed to be certain gaps in the S2000 power curve which allowed the GTA to gain a few lenghts very quikly,
e.g. when it was at the lower reaches of 3rd gear for a corner that was too fast for second in the Honda.
I was surprised to be honest, since the S2000 should be very fast, and in fact is very fast. I didn't really expect a heavier GTA to show so strongly against it - but the V6 is a lovely engine for day to day and more extreme use.
Cheers,
TB

I'm not a doctor - but I really do recommend braking later

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
My mate has an S2000.
Nice car, totally different feeling to the GTA but it is VTEC and an outrageous burst of performance comes in a very short rev band. Out side of that it is decidedly average.
Like TB says, they are very hard to drive within the peak power band and with the torque and power of the GTA I would expect more grunt more of the time.
That said, an S2000 in the hands of a pro would really be something.

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
Driven a friend's S2000 and it is incredible to watch the rev-counter slowly build, even at 6k rpm, but go ballistic after 7ish k rpm.
he described my car as a 'torque monster' after he drove my GTA.
which it IS in comparison.

Honda VTEC is a marvel, but give me torque any day.

fair enough BigFoot. Id agree with you there. it was in the middle of the day pulling out of town onto a small highway and back into the suburbs. So you can call it a spirited drive. I dont race my GTA, its just once in a blue moon when I feel like giving it a push. Other than that Im a very conservative driver I think. With the short distances that we drive in Cape Town I think 400kms a tank is quite conservative.... but wow its a "lekker" (good) feeling to give it horns every now and then!!!

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
I'm afraid the S2000 would have definitely had the edge on the twisties. I drove S2000's a couple of times and the cornering is superb. Much better balance than with the heavy V6 of the GTA and rear wheel drive...
I have a constant problem with cars... I really like rear wheel drive, but I need 4 seats. I don't like the look of BMW's and I only like Mercs that I can't afford.
That leaves you with the RX8. Fab car. I even put a deposit on one (before buying my GTA). But the looks put me off. And the engine sounds like a sewing machine.... Am I missing something ? What other RWD 4 seaters fit the package ? Oh, and Evos and Subarus don't do it for me at all... Far too ugly.
The GTA (147 or 156) is a comprimise. It doesn't handle as well as better balanced cars, but the sound is incredible and the whole experience is more engaging. The S2000's VTEC engine is amazing at high revs, but it's hard work with the gears to keep in the power band.
Olly.

W210 E55s aren't too dear just now.
Also, how about a Jaguar XJR. I still miss mine (but not as much as I miss my GTA )

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
I do like XJR's. My next door neighbour has one. A bit of a size difference from a 147 to an XJR
Too big... Apart from anything else I'd have to rearrange my garden to fit it on the driveway!

Get a Q2 fitted and it will handle much, much better.

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
What's that a diff ? How much incliding labour roughly ?
Are there insurance implications or is it not seen as a performance gain ?

The Q2 is a limited slip diff that uses the Torsen principle (although I have to admit that I don't really know what that means ). What it does is split the power between the front wheels so that the one with more grip gets more power, significantly improving handling. Really overcomes many of the issues with front wheel drive.
Auto Lusso do them for 500 quid fitted. Get them while they are still this cheap price - it's a steal for the amount of engineering you get. No insurance implication, Adrian Flux did not add anything to my policy for this mod (they're great BTW).
Cheers,
Nigel

Re: Hi Everyone... gta vs s2000
Olly, keep the GTA for every day and buy a rear wheel drive car as a 'toy'. There are lots to choose from if you start looking at the classic's and they aren't that expensive either, Alfa 75's jump out as an obvious starting point.

£500 is a great price, I do believe Alfa have plans to increase the cost price of the diff though as its such a popular mod that people are adding to their cars.

Vantastic is selling his 75 for about £3.5.. Bargain price, it is immaculate! 190bhp through the wheels of a shiny black 75 with red leather
