Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

That's quite worrying SR.

You being the fastidious type wouldn't have had any oil additives put in would you? I'm sure you wouldn't.

You're right mudhut. I am very much so the fastidious type

To clarify, the gearbox / diff oil was very dark grey in colour which Ned said pointed to a lot of heat. Saying that, Clare has been known to dabble Scooby's and even a GT40 from time to time

Perhaps it was to be expected, even at 20k miles? (what's the change interval for gerabox oil)

I do use ZX1 in my engines. In fact, I swear by it. The GT now gives c28mpg where it would give c24mpg before. It also revs more easily and just feels "better"

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

DO NOT PUT A 2.5 BOX IN IT!!!!

I'm running a 2.5 box with a 3.2 engine and it is USELESS in the wet. Even in the dry I nearly always use 2nd to pull away and its caused the clutch to wear out in 20k miles. 1st Gear is simply too short for the GTA engine.

I'm currently investigating a solution in the form of a 3.0 166 gearbox - Its an oldish thread but I am still working away on it. (Both gearboxes are sat in the garage doing nothing...)

Alfa Romeo forum: 3.0 166 gearbox in a 156?

So gimmie more or nothin at all.

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

that is the 3.0 gtv gearbox, from the rest of this and from an other broken 156 gta gearbox we build a hybrid 6speed gearbox :-)

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

In an early review of the 147 GTA back in January 2003 the diff went, could of easily been a one off then but the number of reported cases is well into double figures now.

So there you are then, a bulletproof case for the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA. Or it might have been had the car itself proved just as bullet proof. Alas it broke a tooth in the differential and had to be trailered home. Hopefully, this was due to it being an early post-launch press car, which judging from the stone chips and mileage, had quite clearly already had a hard life. But as it stands at the moment, we can only state as we find.

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

The GTA gearboxes aren't that common to break, just the diffs.
Fit a Q2 diff and you are laughing, the reliability being just one of the benefits.

For modified cars (e.g. supercharged) its a must have really..

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

Worth checking the gearbox oil, colour and quality as well as level by the sounds of it. Pictures locating dipstick posted here (3.2 V6 Blown Diffs).

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

i already have q2, but over 300 ps you can worry from this. my best time in 1/4 milles from last year is 13.74 sec with 2.0 60 fett. but in the winter we find some power in the engine. today will have the first race in this year and i will be happy if i can broke my rerord and not anything else. i waiting for a new racing clutch because thye stock is loses. we had a test day a month before and in i had 14.1 in werry cold and with street tires with 2.4 sec 60fett but the top speed was higher with 10km/h.

Re: 147 GTA gearbox knackered

Hi Korryy, if you mean 300bhp is enough to cause the Q2 to be able to spin wheels in a drag race I'm sure it is, although its easier to spin it up under cornering. Its still a big improvement over standard though.

But If you were worried about the strength of the Q2 diff it does appear to be very strong, and is running ok in cars approaching 400bhp.

Regards,
TB
