P0340 error on 156 GTA

Hi. My friend has a 156 GTA and recently it started to run in limp mode. It is hard to start, doesn’t rev above 3500rpm and is REALLY thirsty. When hooked up on a PC, an P0340 error showed up. It is "cam angle sensor circuit malfunction".

- Sensor was replaced with a new one - it didn’t help
- Cables were checked they are all ok from ECU to the sensor

There is one thing that is not clear, the sensor has 3 pins. + Voltage, ground, sensor data. On the + voltage cable from ECU, there is 5V. Some people in Alfa service say it should be +5, some say +12. We checked 166 3,0V6 and it has +12V.

Does anybody know what voltage should be on 156 GTA cam angle sensor?
Considering the sensor and wiring are OK, any idea about possible fault?

Under the line question:
Why a V6 is using cam angle sensor? Cam timing is fixed, not variable like on TS engine. The cam angle might change only if timing belt snaps so why the sensor is there???
