Re: Cam locking tools GTA

Is that definitely for the gta engine? i.e 3.2
I thought I read somewhere that the cam locking tools for the regular 3.0 v6 are different.

I hadn't looked at the link.......

But I have now and it looks like an invaluble resource. I notice you get a mention re the crank shaft locking tool. What's the difference between this one:

and this one:

I can't see how the first one works.

Re: Cam locking tools GTA

Hi Chris.

The first picture is the device you use to bolt to the front of the engine block and the big lump of aluminium that's on one side of it engages with the recess in the crank pulley. This is only to undo the crankshaft nut. Don't know what the actual position of the crank is when the thing is fitted but suspect that the crank will not be held firmly.

The second pic, is for locking the flywheel. This is one of the bits I have bought the original of. I measured it for Gary and he has reproduced it for sale.

So the 1st one holds the outer rim of the pully? I'm not convinced that's a good idea.... You probably know that the aux pully is in two seperate parts, the inner part being boded to the outer by means of a vibration damping rubber insert. It seems to me that trying to undo the nut will put an excessive amount of force through the pully which could lead to it failing?

No. It fits into the pulley and holds the inside. When you look at the pulley, there is a balancing mass that goes part the way round the inside. The aluminium block on the tool fits into the rest of the pulley (where the balancing mass isn't) so when you try to undo the nut, the crankshaft rotates until the mass on the puley hits the aluminiun block, holding the crankshaft against the rotation of the nut.

Sorry. I was being thick I realised that last night when I was putting a GTA back together after changing a hydraulic tappet.....

It seems like a handy tool to have. I may well invest in one of them too.
