147GTA insurance write off
Guys,
Just heard back from the insurance assessors that they are prepared to write my car off because of the engine damage.
I'm waiting for the call to see how much they'll give me, but I'm very tempted to buy it back if I can to sell on. Seems a damn shame to waste a good car.
Wondering what a realistic buy back value might be. Its a 53reg with about 60000 miles in all round decent condition and excellent history.
Engine has sucked up water, broken a rod, still runs on 5 with lots of engine management lights up on the dash.
What do you think the value of the car would be and would anyone be interested if I could get hold of it for a reasonable price?

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
TBH I'm not suprised.
But don't write it off and buy it back. Either write it off and buy a different one (GTA's are hard enough to sell as it as, imagine trying to flog a CatD?)
Or do what I did - find out what they were offering for a repair and get the cash value paid to yourself, then get to Autolusso/Autodelta/whoever and get a recon. You'll probably find yourself a little better off - new engine are over £4k from Alfa (well, used to be) but you'll get a lightly used one for £2.5-3k.

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
I was going to be selling the car soon anyway to cover the cost of my new Fiat 500, due late march early april.
I'm thinking if I get a good buyback price, I might have it back anyway though.

I'd be interested in the engine if you want to sell it.

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Not yet Johny, insurance are dragging their feet on payout, so I'm getting the ombudsman involved to kick them up the ar*e. They agreed to pay me personally the cost of the repair, so I could take to to Autodelta, but I've yet to see the cash

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Sorry John, I know who you are now
I didn't pay the deposit to Autodelta, because Jano wanted to know how much the insurance payout was, I said I wanted a breakdown of all the costs before I went ahead.
Its seriously going skyward though, last estimate was £7200+VAT, +clutch and I'm hoping to haggle a good deal on some other bits while I'm there
Bit different to when you told me it'd only cost me 'about a grand extra'

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Was it just the engine that was damaged?
If so, then the cost of this to be repaired shouldn't mean that the car is written off (unless the insurer is referring to some car pirce guide that says the car is worth about £100 i.e. Parkers).
Speak to the insurance company with some examples of costs of other cars for sale. The beast must be saved!

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Guys,
If I can get it back I'll be buying to sell on to someone - if its to break that would be a shame I think as its a lovely car, but so be it.
Its black leather interior by the way
Regards
Robert

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Your initial Q was how much do you think the insurance offer would be less an engine and possibly on Cat d
I would say that £3k or thereabouts we be a reasonable figure, their repair costs would be calculated on dealer labour rates,£75 hr for removal and replacement of engine and other items plus cost of a new engine if you can get 1!
I think these costs would be far greater than most would appreciate, that's why they do come up for grabs through salvage sales, simply uneconomical

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
305s, disks and pads replaced about a year ago.
I know its not an economical repair if you pay to get it done thru a dealer, but it still runs on 5, so a rebuild may be possible. even if not a replacement engine is a possibility at 3K.
So if its 3K to buy, then 3K or even 4K to fix, the end result is a lovely GTA for 6 or 7K, admittedly on Cat D. For those that can live with a Cat D thats a decent car for the money IMO.
The car has full history, and is otherwise in great condition, so for someone this could be a good way into a cheap GTA.
Anyway I probably won't be able to get it for sensible money so its all academic really...

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Just keep up posted on the cost of a buy-back, someone on here might want to buy it through you, I'm sure you could stick a couple of hundred quid on top as your 'commission'..
If it goes to a breakers and you can find out which one let me know, as I'm after bits and pieces, driveshafts, uprights, hubs/bearings, calipers, pads, discs etc..

But I really want better brakes, and buying the bits brand new is prohibitively expensive..

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Seems a shame to write it off for want of an engine. Autolusso do a replacement 3.0 for £2500, can't imagine it'd be too much more for a 3.2.

Re: 147GTA insurance write off
Guys,
Car has been written off, I got an offer I am very happy with from the insurers.
Unfortunately they wanted over £3K to buy it back, so thats that. If I get wind of where its going will let everyone know, but at that sort of money I can't imagine it will be parted out, more likely to go to someone who can sort the engine out and sell it on.
All the best
