156 GTA 2002 Minus an engine!- What would you pay?
Trying to value one of these beasties
I have a opportunity to get a GTA saloon but has had engine problems
So the Q to you guys and girls who own this model,is what would you value it at?
Car is in good order and undamaged except the engine issue
Interior is all black, multispoke alloys, xenons, what i would describe as denim blue paintwork
Oh and no service history to hand,so that in itself is gonna take a chunk out the value

£3500? At a random guess. That's how much I would pay.

Does it have 330mm or 305mm brakes?

It's a 2002. So its 305 unless it's had the upgrade.

The engine is about £3000 grand on its own so knock that off what you would pay, around £3500 sounds about right - you'll have the install costs too.

Buy it for 2 grand and rebuilt the engine. What exactly is wrong with the engine?

Bear in mind that the engine isn't available, you'll need to get one second hand. Cant get the con-rods from Alfa anymore either.

Exactly - so why bother at £3.5k? Without the engine its "just" a 156 shell -yeah, yeah... GTA defenders hold on! I know it'll have a few other goodies...... but you are the buyer of a potential heap of woe. If you were trying to trade it in poor condition WITH an engine you'd get the sucking air through the teeth crap.
Ask yourself seriously "who wants this?" Very limited demand. Quite rare engines. Hassle. Not a hugely popular retailer when you need to sell it.
Two grand and I'd be slitting me own throat takin' it off yer 'ands at that mate.....

Re: 156 GTA 2002 Minus an engine!- What would you pay?
I wouldn't have thought £3.5k, when you consider the time and effort it is going to take to put right. As Operationalfa says they are starting to go for around £7k for one that you can drive away. So if you work out that an engine is around £4k fully fitted with the associated buggeration, I would say absolutely no more than about £2.9k and that was if you are the type of person to follow a project through.
It would seem that there is great potential to start and slowly stall unless you have great energy and access to a decent garage etc. I bet that somehow it will cost you as much as a running one eventually somehow, with nothing (discount) to pay for all your effort.
Call me cynical or negative, but unless you have unswerving perseverance, patience and deep pockets I would drive a hard bargain.
I would say the one that the chap who bought the one off ebay recently for £4k that had been repaired but needed finishing probably got a very good deal. One with no service history and a knackered or no engine is a money pit.
However, you pays yor money and yus take your choice.....

Re: 156 GTA 2002 Minus an engine!- What would you pay?
To add a little detail to my original post
The engine is there but in bits,it has been stripped and for reasons unknown, there are some items but nothing to say that it is all there
It is better to give a bit of flexibility to price, that is why i asked as per no engine
Sounds weard but all paperwork is there as to show it is legal,i was thinking 2500-3000,is probably worth that in parts!

Maybe if you are thinking of getting into breaking. Will you sell all the bits if that's what you decide to do? How long will that take? Are you OK with taking that long to get your money back breaking someone else's problem?
Just a thought or two.

Re: 156 GTA 2002 Minus an engine!- What would you pay?
My thoughts are that given the above posts relating to installing recon engine and somebody else doing the engine work, this project could possibly be on the road for £5k
That has got to be a bargain in anybodys eyes, and no engine costs for a good while, mmm sounding better all the time
Next Q,anybody want to buy a blue Gta for £6k

Best of luck with it.
My own limited experience of these things suggests costs and time tend to start off optimistically under-estimated and rapidly get further out of hand.

Re: 156 GTA 2002 Minus an engine!- What would you pay?
I reckon buy it for as cheap as you can get it, and take it to somewhere like AHMotorsport, and get it put back together as a 3.8

It's what i do Jim for a paid hobby
I have had a number of 156 and broke them for parts, and always had a good return on my initial outlay,it's what you know what the parts are worth that dictates your initial outlay
I have had nothing to do with Gta's so i am putting feelers out to those that do

Re: 156 GTA 2002 Minus an engine!- What would you pay?
I disagree with those saying that its not worth the hastle. A good young low milleage GTA is around 11 grand. And if you buy a car like this and rebuild it properly you can have some serious cash left to make it a total monster, even better than a good GTA. I paid 13 grand for mine last year but if i had a similar opportunity back then i would grab it.
