Wheel Damage

Hi all.

I was registered on this forum a while ago, but had forgotten by details and all that (defo getting old).

Anyway, i have absolutely loved my G since she was first delivered last September, i do a lot of mileage on a mixture of motorways and A/B roads and it always cheers me up to drive the G after a poo day at work!!!!

Anyway, i was just curious if anyone else has had experience of the 17" wheels snapping in a collision? i had to avoid hitting a ******** who doesn't understand basic road signs (stop, give way etc). i hit the NSF wheel on a kerb reasonably hard (but not to the extent of triggering the airbags) and the damage to the wheel was shocking!! Has anyone else seen/ heard of similar damage??

That's a very neat and symetrical break, looks almost engineered.
Don't know what caused it though faulty cast, heat fatigue, scoring (upset anyone)??

I had something similar with an XR2 years ago - some oiks had shifted a kerbstone (the whole thing) into the road - it took a quarter of the pepperpot wheel out and damaged the suspension and steering.

I suggest - if you hadn't thought of it already - that you get the geometry checked; I know the wheel isn't the most solid of things, but I suspect you may have hit that kerb harder than you thought.

Dear Lord that's appalling!!

I've never seen anything like that at all. Was it a particularly high kerb?

It wasn't a very big kerb at all, thats what surprised me so much, i thought it'd popped the tyre.

the car has gone into the body shop this afternoon, i have asked that brakes and suspension are throughly checked.

It appears from a quick look round the damage that there is no bodywork damage which made me think that possibly that the wheels are engineered to fail to absorb energy.

Waiting to see what pile of poo they expect me to drive while the G is in dry dock!!

On the Turkey Giulietta forum I've seen exactly the same damage also to the 17 inch turbin rim.http://tablet.donanimhaber.com/showT...37083700&p=150

Cheers mate.

Its with the insurance company now so fingers crossed. I just wanted to highlight the issue (if there is one) but as you say, the results of a relatively minor collision are shocking

I've translated it buy google. It seem to be that this guy has taken corner to fast, slidden on road dust and hit kerb/sidewalk

Thanks mate.

maybe its an issue when the impact is onto the face of the wheel (like hitting a kerb on full lock) as opposed to hitting a kerb 'head-on'

looking for a 147

I imagine they'll probably explain to him that he's had some sort of collision, and broken his wheel

Crikey.

I was a frontline Police Officer here in New Zealand from 1995 to 2006 and I saw similar damage to a lot of alloys on a ton of different brands over the years when I attended 'collisions' (no such thing as 'accidents' apparently). So it certainly is not unique to Alfa Romeo. Probably does not make you feel any better though.

It may be another thing to check when buying a second hand Giulietta..

On the other hand, that collision woulda dented the wheel big time anyway and buckled rims are still basically a write-off, even if they look slightly less dramatic.

3 weeks after I got mine (with the same wheels and colour too!) I stuffed it in a curb slipping on black ice in a car park. Understeered and hit the wheel square on to the curb (I had put on full lock to get round). Result? Tracking was shot and had a scuff on the wheel. SGT in Maidenhead did a once over the same day confirmed the suspension was ok, had tracking and wheel repaired a week later. Mine seemed to take the smack pretty well so I think your wheel was a bit ropey/collision was more aggressive than mine (hit the curb at approx 5-10 mph)

Find it hard to believe the wheel would be engineered to do that, you don't really want large masses flying off a car in an accident and possibly hitting others (pedestrians for example). With that sort of break that would have to be a possibility.

Looks nasty though and seeing as I have the same wheels it gives me some concerns.
