Dodge Hornet is to be launched in 2012 as a sedan/liftback using the C-US Wide platform. A pre-production prototype was built using a 1.4 turbo 170 engine. TCT will be available. AWD is a possible option. Exhaust will be Mopar 401 stainless. Hornet SRT will use Mopar tuning if higher dispacment chrysler engines are fitted, possibly the 2.4 tigershark turbo.

So, is the C-US platform the Giulietta?
And then, which one will be the bigger Giulia
C-US is a wider variation of the Giulietta's "Compact" architecture, and either this variation, or an even larger one ("D Compact" has been mentioned) will be used for Giulia.

It's hard to pin down what "platform" is under these cars, because Compact is a modular architecture: it can be stretched in length or width to produce various sizes of vehicles from the Giulietta to the middle of the D-segment (159/Giulia). And, while there's nothing planned, it could be possible to make smaller vehicles too.

Giulia's dimensions are still unknown, except that it'll be around 4.8 metres long (according to Marchionne), a bit longer than 159.

The 159 was 4660 mm long, had a front track of 1590mm, and wheelbase of 2700mm; Giulietta's equivalent measures are 4341 long (if it had a boot it'd be the same length as 159), 1554 mm track and 2634 wheelbase. From the Giulietta mules with the welded-in bits, that Dodge looks to be around 1580 track x 2680 wheelbase (1" / 2.5 cm wider, 2"/5cm longer), but there may still be a bit more "stretch" in Compact.

Incidentally, the man leading the design on Giulia is Lorenzo Ramaciotti. He used to work at Pininfarina, where he knocked out stuff like this and this or this :)

But it's not just the dimensions of the 159, it's also about the balance of the shapes. The 159 has more front overhang compared with the rear. It works as on overall package. Generally, the competition has way more rear overhang and often looks like the car is wearing a nappy (diaper). Stretching the wheelbase will be interesting without other compensation. But, as you infer, Ramaciotti knows how to put shapes together!

I love the 159, and am in the process of buying another... but the Giulia is long overdue, and lets face it the 159 isn't exactly 'roomy' in the back regardless of saloon or 'wagon format.

Lets hope these issues are addressed in the Giulia, and those front end woes on the Mito/Giulietta translate well on a larger front end!

The chunky one is just a mule.

21st century car design isn't done by having-at existing models
with an angle-grinder and oxy-acetylene torch a la Monster Garage.

Good to see the "Hornet" looks so much like a Giulietta.

Well, a 4 door Giulietta.

Okay, a 4 door sedan.

Well okay. It looks nothing like an Alfa at all. In any way.
Quelle surprise!

Here's the teaser site

There's also this little bit of brandname checking:

The all-new Dart is the first Chrysler Group vehicle based upon a Fiat architecture – adapted from the award-winning Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The Giulietta is renowned for satisfying the most demanding customers in terms of road-holding, agility and safety, with exceptional driving dynamics. The Dart leverages all of these attributes within a lengthened and widened platform delivering segment-leading levels of interior roominess.

The all-new Compact U.S. Wide (CUSW) architecture underpinning the Dart is a state-of-the-art architecture with an industry-leading 68 percent of the body composed of high-strength steel, resulting in a very strong and rigid structure. Combined with responsive steering, four-wheel independent suspension, and available 18-inch wheels, the Dart brings fun back to driving in the compact car segment.
That's the first time I've seen a manufacturer so explicitly call attention to their platform sharing. Usually, like VAG, they hint at it deep in the press-release or as part of the Q&A session before the test-drives, casino, champagne and hookers.

Following the success of the Freemont (Dodge Journey), it's been suggested that this car will get new front and back clips (like the Golf Mk "six") and be sold as a FIAT in Europe. "Freccetta", anyone? ;)

You gotta love the north americans and their stone age live rear axles; they explicitly mention the Dart has four-wheel independent suspension!

The Dart looks okay-ish, although in my opinion a little overdone. But then again, the tastes across the pond is what it is ...

Chrysler Dart Guilietta

Here in LA Pederson Publications tests its cars down where my factory is. It's quiet, the roads are nice and most people seeing a car racing down the road draped in black heavy cloth figures it's stolen, and no one snitches. Two years ago I saw them testing a red Guilietta. Beautiful. Then no word on importing. Today, a smallish four door draped in black being tested stopped next to me at the light. I smiled and said, "the new small Porsche, SUV?" And the driver said, no, the new Guilietta."

So it's coming here either as a Guilietta or a Chrysler. I hope as the former. As the former owner of a 1968 Road Runner, I'm still sore over what they did to it after a few years of success.

Giulia is due for launch in 2013/2014, and that's going to be aimed squarely at the US market (with possible assembly in the USA too), so you may have seen that, especially as Giulia is to be a four-door model.

On the other hand, 2013 is supposed to bring a Giulietta Sportwagon, using the widened and lengthened floorplan of the Dodge Dart, with a facelift of the Giulietta coming the following year.
