Sorry to interrupt with what might seem a trivial question - but it's confused me...
Do all 1.4 MultiAir 170bhp Giuliettas have the same engine sound?
If you listen to Bob Flavin's video review from 1 min 55s onwards (so as not to take too much of your time ) you can clearly hear various deep growls and whistles from the engine.
Yet when I drove a 1.4 MultiAir a few years back, it sounded nothing like that - just a standard plain engine sound as you might get from other small engines. Faulty early MultiAir?
And, looking at the comments on the video, seems I wasn't the only one; someone in Australia had an identical experience to me. This isn't too surprising when you consider that, at the time, Australian-market FIATs and Alfa Romeos were imported by the New Zealand-based importer (Ateco).
I was expecting similar performance to a Stilo Abarth but it wasn't. I subsequently bought a QV instead and didn't get on too well with it, mainly because of the manual transmission meaning that only I could drive it, and there were, shall we say, some quality problems with the gearchange on my particular car. Yes the knob fell off, but there were also stiff cables and a weak second gear synchro. Lots of rattles annoyed me, so I sold it
Anyway, this question resurfaces again for me because I'm now considering a series-2 1.4 MA TCT - it's half the price of the series-2 QV TCT - but I don't want to miss out on the engine note that Bob's earlier 1.4 clearly has.
There were several varieties of 1.4 - is that part of the explanation - perhaps we were supplied with basic 1.4s even though they were TCTs?
And is a 2015 model different again?
Sorry for this being a complicated question, but any advice on 1.4 engine sounds would be appreciated
Cheers,
-Alex
