Thinking of a change for my 159TI 2.2 to the 170bhp petrol Guili.
How do they compare?
How do they differ in actual driving, feel/speed etc.
Thanks.

You're going to get loads of different opinions on this one! If you are used to the 159 you may find the G feels like a less substantial car. Which it is but then it doesn't weigh ten tons like the 159. So the G will feel much more agile than the 159 and the 170 engine is much, much stronger than your 2.2. Some will say the G's interior is not the same quality as the 159 and maybe they are right. But in my experience (GMA TCT for 4 years and GQV TCT currently) there is absolutely nothing wrong with the G's interior. It is beautifully designed, quality is good and it is well screwed together. The G was never designed to be a 159 replacement, it competes in a class below. But it is a bloody fantastic car, I love mine to bits. Personally the 159 never did it for me, especially with the 2.2 GM motor. I'm looking forward to more replies, the 159 guys are some of the most sensitive people on the planet......

I p/exed my 159 Sportwagon 2.4 Diesel Qtronic for one of the first 170MA Giuliettas and did not regret it. People said the 159 was a "proper" car - imposing and beautiful, quite practical with it but the diesel was hopeless for my driving, mostly short journeys it never got hot enough and was forever breaking down while the DPF regenerated. The G was more nimble, quicker or at least the same and more economical. Even the 2010 ones were not bad inside at all, lacking a clutch foot rest was and remains a bad point but otherwise I loved it. Only traded it for a Mito QV (same engine) to be a hooligan in but now back in a G and loving it. Not as roomy in the back of course but that may not worry you.

Thanks guys for your input.
I am looking at Veloce spec. so interested how the seating comfort, support and driving position is.
Also having only sat in one a few times would you deem the cabin to be too dark or is it just very masculine ?.
The 159 interior in TI spec in my opinion is very much a " blokes " car
Im glad to hear the Guili is lighter and feels more a responsive drive, the 156's i have had previous could be driven with your finger tips where the 159 just isnt like that.
Please keep your thoughts of good and bad ownership coming.

If you are after Veloce spec that will be the 240bhp 1750 engine which is going to be a lot quicker than the 159. Mine has darkened headlining and I just don't notice it at all.

Ah just realised you might mean "old" Veloce spec - how I wish Alfa would stick to a model naming convention! I had a Lusso spec 170 when they came out and I was very happy.

I think you'll like the g as it is a little closer to your 156 in terms of size and road manners.
The 159 is beautiful but feel and speed are not it's strengths.

I want the steering and dash from the 156.
The looks and seats from the 159.
The brakes and engine from the g.

And the rust from non of them.

Is that any different to other makes of car? A neighbour who has retired from the garage trade was telling me a while back that screws are no longer plated or removable easily for service on cars any more. Ok when it's still in warranty but pretty poor after that.
I'm just hoping/assuming the Giulietta front does not harbour the same level of surprise corrosion as the 159 subframe.

My Subframe is going to need some hammerite soon. It has some surface rust appearing, mainly on the welds.

Also the black bonnet slam panel is beginning to rust at the edges.

Nothing serious though...
