Multiair Engine or Not!!!

After a Range Rover wiping out my son's Punto Multair he now wants a Giulietta. The question is which one. His multiair unit failed at 61k(full dealer history) and £1100 at maindealer to fix. My brother's 170bhp giullietta also failed at 60k so the dillema is Multiair or no multiair. Diesel not an option as he doesn't do the mileage. I have the 120 bhp collezione and that is fine as far as i am concerned.

So did Alfa ever fix the issue with the failing mulitair engines and if so what is the cut off when,what year etc.
Are the replacement ones modified?

I know it sounds a bit trite but Id go for the 1.8 if you can. I drove a 170 MA Giulietta for 2 years then a Mito QV for four with absolute reliability I must say and quite astonishing power and economy from the MA engines but the Tbi even in the first few hundred miles is very different, more relaxed but when you press the loud pedal the sound and the push are intoxicating.

So many issues with the MA. The TBi is a gem, but you have to expect mid 30s economy on reasonable trips, less around town. Having now driven our Jeep Renegade for 6.5k my favourite engine is 2.0 multijet for just effortless driving, good economy ... not so great if you like to rev it hard.

I thought the "evidence" pointed to extended oil changes. Those who chose to have interim changes between services seem to have avoided any problems. Certainly reports suggest that where an MA unit has failed the filter could be found to be clogged.

To redress the balance somewhat my 2011 is currently at 55,000 miles. Having owned it from 2,300 miles I have had the oil changed at approximately 9,000 mile intervals and the filter was replaced when the belts were changed in June (5 years old) and it was as clean as a whistle. The engine still runs as sweetly as when first bought.

For the new model, they have changed oil specs to 0w30 instead of 5w30, some people think that is to avoid problems with MA units, 0w30 leaves less residues and less co2, so probably is related to this. In all my cars I have changed the oil every year or 10km(I'm from Spain).

There have been a lot of discussions on here w.r.t the type of oils used (especially the ACEA C3 rating), and how the wrong type of oil can affect the hydraulic Multiair system.

Additionally, the original service intervals were too long, and I have read about many without issues who have had shorter oil change intervals.

I personally stick to the SELENIA StAR P.E, and wouldn't risk using another oil or a interval longer than a year.

The oil changed to 0w-30 Digitek on the 2014 model year (for the Euro 6 engines). I'm not aware of any technical changes apart from a new engine mapping.
