Has anyone else had an issue with their front parking sensors?
Mine seem to go a bit mental when i am doing slow speeds. a lot of the time there isn't anything in front of me?
I have spoken to Alfa Doncaster (where i bought the car) who have said i am not the only person with this issue, they don't know how to fix it and Alfa wont let the engineers take the car apart as the model is so new.
I am going to call Alfa Customer services tommorow and see what their 2 pence is.
Its mostly because of number plates that are to long and interfere with the parking sensors.
The number plate should be mounted directly to the plinth without any dealer stickers/mounts etc
Mine has not been too crazy. When it has happened its been pedestrians close to car at lights with the odd occassion there was nothing both times the drivers side. Generally it has been ok, but I would say it is a bit too sensitive like the collision detection (you can lower the sensitivity of that though).
Saw the carwow review on youtube too. Apart from a couple of fair points its generally positive and they recommended short listing the Giulia!
The front sensors are quite sensitive. While at a roundabout, with me on the outside lane, I got the message check entire surroundings with a car atleast 3 feet away to the left and slightly in front. Both of us were waiting to exit the round about so were stationary. I think the software for the front sensors need tweaking to adjust the sensitivity and range. It may be worth raising this with ARUK if you are getting frequent warnings. Mine is rare and usually only when something is nearby.
The front sensors are always operational at low speeds, even if stationary, e.g. if someone walks in front of the car.
Personally, I find the sensitivity just right, no problems with them at all.
Mine tend to go off if it's been raining heavily - I have a cloth in the glove compartment for giving them and the FCW thing a wipe.
In the options there is something called parksense that can be turned off, I haven't, but maybe that will stop them engaging unless reverse is selected.
This is what the online extended manual says, which seems to tie up with above observations:
the sensor may detect a non-existent
obstacle ("echo interference") due to
mechanical interference, for example
when washing the vehicle, in rain (strong
wind), hail;
the signals sent by the sensor can also
be altered by the presence of ultrasonic
systems (e.g. pneumatic brake systems
of trucks or pneumatic drills) near the
vehicle;
In my current VW CC (4 days until it gets upgraded to a Giulia :lick: ) my rear parking sensors get in a bit of a tizzy if I am stopped in a traffic jam and another car gets up close and personal behind me even though I am not moving either forward or backwards.
When I first got the car, I got it quite frequently, it was okay after wiping the sensors. It's started up again recently, but I haven't tried wiping them yet.
I have been on to Alfa UK they have said they will contact the dealer, but i cant see what that will achieve as they don't know what the issue is.
I am waiting on the garage to call me to book the car in, it rained today and the sensors went mental again, i have a video though it wont let me upload it as its MP4
just an update for anyone else with this issue the car has been into the dealer and they have decided to replace the sensors so i am just waiting on the part to arrive at the dealers,
Once it has arrived and been fitted i will give an update
I saw something on a US site that said the front number plate interferes with the front parking sensor. Don't know any more than that I'm afraid but there is a sensor reasonably close to the number plate so a possibility?
number plate has been changed and re calibrated they have also replaced the parking sensors, still no joy Alfa are coming out to the garage on Wednesday to have a look at it themselves so hopefully that will be the end of the story!
Did they have to remove the bumper to change sensors? If you don't know, could you kindly find out please? Reason is, I had a bird strike just as I was overtaking a slow car and 2 little birdies swept low right at the crucial time, me thinks oh f00k, smack and birds dead. Stopped to look later and found one of the birds had aimed for the nearside sensor on the hex grille! The sensor was hanging inside the grille and the hexagonal outer cover/piece had broken off at the 2 lugs that clip them in position. Luckily no other damage to grille or bumper. Tied the sensor with 2 small cable ties and all back to normal. I suspect I cant get just the outer cover on its own and will need a new sensor assembly! For now i have left it and plan to take it to the dealer later if the sensors get too sensitive too often. Have been ok so far even in rain.
it would appear the issue is sorted they removed the plinth that the number plate is mounted on as for some reason the car was saying it had been in a front end smash (which it hadn't)
so that appears to have fixed that issue which is a relief after 4 months of the same issue!
with regards to the removing of the bumper and replacing of the parking sensors they guy at the garage said you are looking at half a day for the work and with parts it would cost in the region of £400 which is don't know if to be shocked or surprised by!
Re. the number plate / plinth interfering with parking sensors, yes I have heard something to that effect previously.
FYI, I have a short plate on a short plinth so have never had the nuisance parking sensor problem that others appear to have suffered.
It doesn't really come as a surprise that bumper off etc. would cost so much at main dealer rates. To replace parking sensors on ANY car would mean bumper off but in the case of Giulia, it does seem that the front pkg sensors might be a bit more vulnerable than on most. Just as well that I managed to stick my pkg sensor back together - fingers crossed that it stays that way.
Does anyone have a diagram that show where that front parking sensor near the number plate is. I replaced the mount with number plate surround and now the parking sensor is constantly on. I can't seem to see what the issue is as the plate surrounds are nearly identical, in size, to the mount the was there. Any ideas?
Yes, it is.
Looking at your picture, the plate looks very 'flat' - mine follows the curve of the bumper slightly. If this is the case, then the right hand edge, as you look at it, could be interfering with the signal from the sensor as it would be sticking further out from the bumper.
Thanks for the reply. I did think that initially too. I will have to tinker with it further and hopefully get it to follow the curve of the car more somewhat.
Resolved the issue today. The right hand side of the plate was protruding a bit too much for sensor's liking. Put another screw into an existing hole so the number plate sits closer to the body of the car.
