Tanks, especially old ones that have enjoyed very intermittant use, can be troublesome. Doubly so if steel - I'm not sure on your car. For one thing fuel becomes thick and gluey - could even block small pipes. For another of course there's rust. Rust particles regularly block pick up pipes in ailing tanks. Usually results in a popping on hills or fast driving, or perhaps a loss of power and misfire. You lift off, the flow in the pick-up pipe diminishes, you go over a couple of bumps, the rust drops back to the bottom and off you go again for a bit.
