GTV causing me grief!
I really hope someone can shed light on what is becoming an increasing dilemma for me. My beloved GTV ( Alfetta 2.0 ), is fast becoming unbeloved. Since acquiring the 146 in January, it has stood around kicking its heels getting started every second weekend or so and run for a bit to purge condensation. Anyway, very recently it has started giving trouble - just as I insured it and taxed it again, ready for use!
The battery and brake light would be dim when the ignition was switched on. The engine would turn over, but not fire. And if it did fire, would not run nicely, with the two lights glowing dimly as if current was still being drawn from the battery. Revving it made no difference. If I turn the key a few times, the battery light and brake light would glow brightly and the car would start fine and run ok.
That was till Saturday, where it failed dramatically on the forecourt of the petrol station. The engine would just turn over but not start at all and worse, all the ancilliaries stopped working - no heater fan, no electric windows. The fact that the driver's window was completely down at the time only added to the joy. Turning the ignition key to the first position gives no response from any of the dash lights or gauges. Second position only spins the starter.
I had just filled up with fresh petrol and the battery is not the cause as the headlights are bright and attempting to jump it made no difference. The AA man thought it was the igntion module that had failed, but could it possibly be the coil as well? And why would nothing on the dashboard respond / dead electric windows? Does that draw current via the coil, or is the ignition switch faulty? I don't want to start buying things aimlessly and anyway, chance would be a fine thing as ignition modules appear to be as prolific as Mr. Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.
Help somebody, as the GTV is lying dead at the bottom of the drive where the flatbed dumped it and neighbours and parents getting annoyed. Plastic over open window only makes it look more attractive.
Incidentally, I have cleaned, sanded and sprayed all earths and connections and no fuses are blown. frown
