Ghost in my TS?
I insured my TS yesterday having changed engine and gearbox oil, and replaced the front distributor cap and rotor. The last of these jobs was an almighty pain as I could not get the rotor off the housing and ended up taking it to a local garage who hit it with a bigger hammer and swapped the rotor arm for the new one. The dopey mechanic said he wasn't sure which way the old one had sat so he put the new one in at random and I might have to "swap 2 of the leads over". Once refitted the car didn't run at all on just that set of sparks so I assumed the rotor arm was indeed 180 degrees out of position and I swapped over all four HT leads.
So with the car insured I took it for a drive yesterday. I was mighty impressed by the machine and drove about 10 miles. There was the occasional moment of hesitation from the engine, but when I got back the car wouldn't idle properly. It was as if the ghost of a boy-racer was sat at the lights revving the engine to about 2000 rpm and letting the gas off to drop down, then doing the same again. I switched off the engine and restarted. All was well for a minute and then it started again.
Since then the car sometimes idles normally and other times does this crazy revving. I think this is also connected with the hesitation which has got much much worse to the extent that the engine seems to stop and coast for upto 5 seconds. Weirdly when the engine stops the rev-counter drops to zero before jumping back up again. This despite the car being in gear and travelling along.
I suspect I have mucked something up in the ignition, but can anyone point this hopeless mechanic in the right direction?
