Re: Gearbox pressure
Well the box was leaking through the bottom plate as well I think. When I was cleaning it up I noticed I small dent in the bottom plate quite near the seal but tightening the nuts seemed to sort that out. I suppose it's possible the seal now only leaks when hot and the oil around the back of the box near the top is caused by turbulence or something. I put a card under the box after I've run it a while and there are only a couple of spots in the morning. It's the smell I don't like. Anyway I'll soon find out tomorrow whether it was all a futile jesture.
I've only just bought the car. It was sold cheap with a "gearbox problem" but the gearbox seems to work allright. The seller had "lost" the bill for a recent clutch change. The clutch seems ok and feels new but I wonder whether the box took a knock in the process. The other box I have comes from an '88 Ti and is not quite the same as this '94 1.3 i.e.. It's also not tested and has twice the mileage.
Someone has just suggested to me that the valve could be a rollover safety valve to keep the the oil in if the car ends up on its roof. That sounds very plausible. In which case my leak problem may still be uncured. Will let you know.
