Kev just out of interest how much do you think you have spent on your sud all together including the original car, parts welding gear, re spray etc? Roughly lol?
i never did keep tabs on the spending john, that way it couldn't frighten me too much
i did keep hold of all the invoices for parts for the engine build, paint etc and added them up the other day. came to just over £1k (about £1,068 if I remember correctly) but has gone up since. that doesn't include welding materials (or welders/tools etc
) ebay purchases for doors/wings/seats etc plus all the other bits and pieces it is so easy to forget about
had a good deal on the paint job from jim which helped but all in all i guess i have spent between £3.5 & £4k
i could have bought a better one for less but that wasn't the point of doing it, i have enjoyed the process enormously despite the late nights and constant weekends out there, seems odd now to be in the house before it's dark with nothing much to do
although with the rush for the weekend, then finishing off the clios' head gasket change last night my shed needs a nother tidy up, a proper one this time
was going to do it tonight but had a call this morning from bob, the guy who banger raced those suds last year. he invited me down to his yard to take what parts i needed from the last sud as he promised me the seat belts and anything else of use. got these
a boot floor carpet that i will use for mine once i have cut a piece of plywood to shape to glue it to,
a pair of good caps for the brake master cylinder that haven't
a very good pair of door mirrors which i'm happy about as my glasses have faded a bit
a nice alf tool roll complete with some box spanners and even a wooden handled screw-driver which is nice and period, even if it's not genuine alfa,
a pillar trim to replace my broken one,
and a pair of seat belt buckles but unfortunately they don't fit my belts.
very pleased with my haul though
he isn't going to banger race this last car and it seems destined for the crusher. i will be stripping all the useful parts off it to sell to make some money for bob, the deal we struck to allow me to get a few parts from this car and the previous ones.
it is an "X" reg 4 door 1.5sc with series 3 plastic bumpers & wings, but with a boot rather than a hatch and a series 2 style dash.
the seats aren't too bad in a light blue but the mice have been at the passneger front one. door cards reasonable, handles/locks ok, back lights, roof lining clean and free of holes if a little saggy in the middle (no sunroof) and it has a really nice boot with virtually no corrosion
shame the rest of the car isn't so good, too far gone to realistically save, inner wings need work, sills & steps, only the o/s/r door looks ok, roof covered in dents (big dents
) very rusty around the rear window. haven't looked too far underneath as it's in a grass/mud yard but i guess it would need work. engine partially stripped also.
i will be rescuing all the useful items though, only the shell will be crushed, a shame but it's too bad really. at least the parts will help others keep on motoring
