Not Happy Another gearbox leak

What is it with these cars ??? just as something goes right (rear seat belts fitted OK ) .............something else goes wrong

I seemed to have solved the previous gearbox oil leak by replacing the gearchange seal at the rear of the 'box - happy days

Took the old girl out for a spin this morning, everything going fine, then all of a sudden after just moving off onto a roundabout - poof - clouds of white smoke and the unforgettable stink of hot gearbox oil.

I stopped and took a quick look underneath and sure enough gearbox oil dripping heavily (not quite pouring) onto the exhaust

So we limped home and i took another quick look underneath, the oil seal i'd replaced - still in place - no apparant problems there, but there is alot of oil much higher up at the backend of the gearbox....

I'm not sure how much oil i lost, i have been back to where it happened and the isn't a pool of oil sitting there

So are there any other seals up there at the backend of the 'box?? is there a breather on a sud gearbox that may have been blocked and finally unblocked under pressure?? I've looked in the haynes manual but thats not really much help.

Any thoughts are most welcome as i really am not looking forward to maybe having to take the engine out to check out the gearbox!!!!

Re: Another gearbox leak

Couple of possibilities. (1) the gearbox end plate is sealed with a gasket. That may have failed, but if so, I would expect a leak low down. (2) There is a breather at the top of the box, close to the rear. If you have over-filled the box, then you will get some loss there. So, my advice, for what it is worth is, on alevel surface, remove the filler plug and check the oil level. It should be just on the bottom edge of the filler hole. A slight incline can make a big difference. Clean up the back of the box and try again. If it was a bit overful, you may not get a recurrance of the problem. Best of luck.
