33 crossmember bolts - help!
I wondered if anyone might be able to help me?
I am trying to tighten the bolts that hold the front cross member to the body but it seems that the square captive nuts are crushing the front chassis leg box section. My car was acid dipped to return it to bare metal and remove all signs of corrosion, and I am wondering if something has been dissolved in the process, should there be some kind of strengthening tube in this area? If there was and it was made of a non-ferrous metal it would have been dissolved in the dip, something is obviously not right as the chassis legs should not be squashing as they are and the bolts are nowhere near tight.
I've attached a couple of photos to illustrate the area I'm talking about and the problems I'm having as you can see in the 2nd photo, there is a slight bulge in the chassis leg as the force from tightening the bolt is crushing it, as well as cracking to the bracket. I haven't got the bolt very tight yet and it should not be doing this.
Any info would be much appreciated...
