well nick mate iv had a mare with the engine change, iv had the engine and box in and out 3 times in as many weeks
Me being a cheap skate is the reason more than anything tho haha
first off i removed the 1.5 engine because it had low compression and was a bugger to start cold, also the 1.2 box crunched in first so that had to come out!!
Dropped a good 1.7 in having had the heads done and reshimmed, the block was untouched and went in as i bought it except for painting it. Looking at it it looked to have been rebuilt just before i bought it as the bores still had the honing marks and the piston tops where very clean it was obvious it hadn't done many miles. I also fitted a a 1.5 box id bought.
so over the next couple of days i got it all plummed in and took it for a run up the road. Unfortunately the box crunched like hell in 1st and reverse and the rear crankshaft oil seal was spewing oil out all over the brakes!!!
so pulled them out, replaced the oil seal and put another box in i knew to be a good one!
put it all back in and went for another test drive. bugger if it wasn't still crunching in 1st and reverse!! Thought it seemed very strange for both boxes to have identical crunches and its rare for 1st and rev sincro's to go anyway isn't it?. so turns out it was the clutch which wasn't disengaging the drive fully, it looked vertually knew so i hadn't bothered to change it.. Except for the crunching youd never know it was faulty until i jacked it up, put it in 1st and watched the wheels spin while my mate sat in it with the clutch down!!!!
so out it came again, new clutch and back in!! So alls good now, no crunching, and the engine is perfect. Only thing is, i was changing drive shaft flanges as i went as some leaked oil. So if i haven't gone and damaged one and cracked the housing so now its leaking gearbox oil, iv had to drop the drive shaft and brake disc off to get at it grrrrrrrrrr
so now am waiting for a good second hand one off john and then hopefully itll be ready for MOT
and on the plus side i imagine the crunch on the other two boxes was caused by the faulty clutch which is a big bonus
