Asking for advise

Dear all,

I have a problem that want advise. My Sprint is using lead petrol. After the government not allowed to import lead petrol, I still can buy some lead substitutes which added to the fuel tank everytime. But now, the petrol station also stopped to import the lead substitutes too. Thus my Sprint's engine have some abnormal sound when running.

As I remenber, there had a product that just like a lead stick which can put into the petrol tank, after that, the car will no need to add lead substitutes for 100000km. Am I correct? If yes, anyone can told me the where can I buy this. Thanks!

Re: Asking for advise

I believe that all Boxers can run unleaded petrol just fine; they just need a different ignition advance adjustment.

Re: Asking for advise

Alfasud.ti is correct.

In general unleaded petrol has a lower octane level than the leaded stuff, so the strange noises you are hearing is the pinking (spelling???) that is caused by the engine.
You possibly have to retard the timing about 1/2 or 1 degree and the sound will go away.
There is an easy way to check. If the car is idling you should not notice the noise, only when the engine is under strain, for instance when you are driving uphill, should you hear the noise.
In the long term it is very damaging to the motor, so get it done as soon as possible, otherwise you could end up with burnt valves.

Boxer motors have cast iron blocks, but the heads are aluminium, so the valve seals etc. will handle the unleaded fuel fine in all other respects

Re: Asking for advise

If you don't want to retard the ignition you can always use an octane booster. The MG Owners Club sell Castrol Valve Master Plus, which is both a lead substitute and octane booster...I'm sure they'll deliver to Hong Kong (see

I'd be very wary of things like lead sticks...

Re: Asking for advise

You could see if you can get higher octane unleaded petrol.

Re: Asking for advise

All Sprints will run on unleaded but engine codes 301-24, 301-28 and 301-48 require ignition adjustment as does the 1983-87 1.3; 5 degrees +/- 1 at 900 BTDC without vacuum. The 1.7 requires no adjustment. Taken from Autodata ISBN 0-85666-529-0.
Adjustment might not be necessary if you use 98 octane un-leaded.
I use Red-line lead substitute in my 1978 BMW R100RS.
There are different products and its best to keep to the same one as the lead substitute varies from one to another.

Re: Asking for advise

try getting a marelli distributor
they are so easy to change the springs in the advance mechanism
and you can set the car up how you like best
