Just for comparison - our 156 has a safety device that shuts off the electrics to the fuel pump in the event of an accident to prevent fire. Some sort of inertia switch. If it's triggered you can reset it by hitting a button that's under the passenger seat - e.g. if you've had a small incident and it has triggered and you want to drive your car home.
I've heard of similar things being recommended for track cars with high pressure injection fuel pumps.
