Re: New Head Gaskets Problem
When you have it at top dead centre is it? There are a number of marks. If it is at advance mark before tdc check the rotor arm is pointing 'at' the pick up for cylinder no. 1 (left front as you look at the engine from the front of the car). the dist rotates at 1/2 engine speed so quite possible for there to be a problem even if marks do line up. The trick will be in rotating crank through 1 complete rotation and not letting the valves clash with the piston crowns. If I remember rightly the rotor rotates in a clockwise direction therefore moving dist anticlockwise will advance and vice versa. The dist is connected to the oil pump via a shaft which engages on a gear on the crankshaft. When I rebuilt my engine 10 years ago I had it 180 out of phase and tried moving dist. It did not work, (I got it to work by moving H.T. leads but I put everything as it should be), as drive for dist is offset. Did it by dropping sump, undoing pump fittings, rotating shaft 180 degrees, bolting pump back and replacing sump. Did you move(rotate) the engine to de-coke the pistons? If you did, perhaps this is when it became out of sync. Now it may be trying to fire on the exhaust stroke (in effect). Hope this is of help to you.
