now I know i've said of late that i'm doing no more projects for people, and i meant it. it's a huge commitment to undertake which although enjoyable it puts a lot of strain into life.
but when an opportunity to own
a car such as this comes along you just have to say yes
i was actually approached a year ago if i wanted to have this car (remember speaking to shrew about it whilst walking round cadwell at the bsb meeting, just had this years bsb visit last week) and at the time i said i'd be very interested in it but the owner then had a change of heart and decided to rebuild it himself, perfectly understandable
when the same fella came to see me at work a couple of weeks ago to say that he wasn't going to finish the car after all and would i still be interested
...............didn't take long to think about that one!!
of course i wanted the car, but could i commit to another rebuild? knew in my mind though that it was a chance not to be missed, i'd regret it if i didn't at least go and have a look
so a visit was arranged to go up and see it last saturday to see if it was as good as i hoped. was kind of hoping that it was a basket case as it would have been easier to walk away from, but one look and i knew i had to have it
a deal was agreed last saturday but no money changed hands until today, so i've hung back from starting this thread as i hadn't actually "bought" anything "today"
. not that i don't trust johns' word at all about selling it, far from it. a top fella by anyones estimation. just it now seems more real that it will be mine now that money has changed hands and a lot of the parts are back here with me now
so, i've got this far down and not mentioned what i've bought.
when i bought VJM back in 2007 (seems longer ago
) it was because i couldn't find an early sud. as much as i loved that car it wasn't quite
what i wanted.
what i'm now the very
lucky new owner of is an S1 ti, the original 1186cc engined ti no less
it had been started as a project some 5+ years ago from what was by all accounts a very solid car.
new front wings & wing rails were fitted, new front & rear panels, rear arches etc. even a brand new boot lid was sourced for the refurb.
the shell was then painted and put on a trolley awaiting rebuild, where it still sits today.
considering it's been sat for so long the paintwork/bodywork is in remarkably great condition, no evidence of any nasties coming back through so confirms the paint prep was top notch all those years ago.
the car is pretty much complete we hope, spent this afternoon finding parts for the car which had been stored for years. very happy to say that the original ti seats have stood up pretty well to being stored. covered in dust and grime but should come up very nice.
dashboard is in great condition, no cracks across the top or anything, gauges all present. even comes with a centre console that has the alfa radio blank plate still in place
webasto roof in good condition by the looks of it.
axles/suspension have been refurbed and powder coated ready for fitting.
all the body panels are in first class condition, needs the outer skins of the bonnet and doors painting but they will need hardly any prep as in first class condition.
the engine has just been fully refurbed this winter, stripped right back and new rings etc. should be a little honey
to say i'm chuffed is an understatement
the dream of owning an early stainless bumpered sud looked to be just that, a dream. the ones that did come up for sale were always at the wrong time or needed far too much doing, or were far beyond my budget.
the fact that this car has had all the hard work done and seems to be more or less complete is just an awesome deal for me.
can't wait for it all to be back together and let john take it for a drive.
roll on next summer
