A gear that rolls along a toothed arc, that holds a channel that the glass is supported in. You might want a piece of duct tape to hold the glass to the roof of the car so the window doesn't drop down as you move the mechanism out. I also had to drill out the bolt heads, replaced the mechanism and had to replace the captive nuts with bolts facing back into the car, held in place by chemical metal. I wasn't going to try to weld the metal that was there, but it would have been better if I had, the chem metal bond is too brittle really and I keep expecting the mechanism to fall off.
So then you will find the little metal pocket that the whole thing fits into will have rusted out. That means any water on the window will flow down to the bottom of the car and sit on the sill. It needs to leave the car - the alfa design was a piece of plastic hose which allowed it to flow out to the rear wheel arch -but it fills up with dust and grit until it is blocked, then holds the water in - hence your rusted window mechanism.
My plan is to recreate the pocket with fibreglass, and then to remember to clear out the hose regularly. Haven't done that yet.
Cover your replacement part with grease, and while you are in there it's worth sticking in some dynamat to quiet the road noise, and then fishoil the whole cavity really well.
