Hi all, me again.
Both my current sprint and my old sprint have this rattly sound in the exhaust (sounds like underneath the car, don't know exactly where). When you lift off the gas pedal suddenly, it clatters loudly and annoyingly. I have heard this on an old alfa 33 I passed the other day too. Really detracts from the boxer rasp.
a). What is the source of this?? My mechanic has told me in the past that it is *supposed* to be there, something about a reed valve in the system that redirects some exhaust back into the intake to reduce emissions. (I'm becoming wary of his word and overcharging ways
) My friend who listened under the car while i induced the rattling says it comes from one of the "silencers" shown in my service manual.
In one of the service logs when I got the car, it says "catalytic converter has dumped contents into muffler" or something like that.
b). Can it be fixed or replaced? I'm fairly technically capable, so would I be able to pull off parts of the exhaust system if I invested in a set of ramps? (Any advice related to DIY exhaust work welcome).
c). Would it be worth (performance, cost) getting a wider diameter aftermarket exhaust? If so, would they keep the silencers/cats/etc.etc? Might I be required to get a new catalytic convertor if it has failed?
Sorry for the heap of questions.
Maybe for someone with personal experience with this.
