While you are poking around, look in the wheel arch in front of each rear wheel. There is a round coin sized drain hole there which was supposed to drain the part of the car beneath the rear side windows. They'll be blocked, the inside will have rusted, and your window winder will seize up, if it hasn't already. Poke something into the drain hole to clear it, and one day take the window winder off (screw in the centre under a small cover), remove the interior cardboard trim, and clean out the cavity. If it isn't completely rusted out, buy a lottery ticket, then spray fishoil into the area and lube the window winder with some nice thick grease.
If it is rusted out you may find the easiest thing to do is to abandon hope of opening the windows, and seal them up permanently. I cleaned mine out and plan to make a fiberglass lining - the key is that water runs down the glass and pools in the area inside the car, behind the B pillar, instead of being caught in the pockets and run down the drain hoses to the wheelarch. Mine used to run straight out, but I Dynamatted the car which has sealed the lower area so now I could keep goldfish in there after heavy rain; I need to seal the top area and allow the plastic hoses to do their job.
There is a man in Italy who designed this system, and if I ever find him he's going to get a kicking.
