Temporarily, as a diagnostic measure. What's the worst that can happen in the time it takes to work out whether the thermostat's the problem? She'll be right, mate.
I just can't remember whether running with no thermostat would actually be very easy to do on the boxer engines. Don't think so.
Guys, if i take the old thermostat out, the courier will arrive just after i put it all back together. @Shrew there are 33's being parted out all over the show here but very few sud parts. Will keep a look out for one though.
Thermostat finally arrived, gonna have to make a gasket (they didn't send the gasket and refuse to upgrade postage, stat took 2 weeks). Gonna go with gasket paper and not cereal boxs hope that it doesn't leak. Or should i just wait?
Radiator and new hoses in, when i started her up after a few weeks sitting, oil started to leak out of the right carb . It was sitting on top of the carb bowl and dripping down both sides. I was expecting coolant to leak, not oil, what do?
Are you sure a bit of oil hasn't dripped out of the crankcase breather tubes the upper ends of which you have disconnected from the intake and are sitting above the carbs?
Nice new rad by the way! Where did you end up getting it from?
Sorry I just remembered I was going to check my spares for a split housing thermostat - my wife decided we were going away that weekend and I completely forgot. Do you still need it? I can have a look this weekend.
Yeah the oil must have come from the breather tubes (it was quite a lot- wierd). Has stopped now. All good, i got one off astudialf, still have the old one in though (the split piece stat has fused into the housing) which is not causing overheating now so guess it didn't need a new stat anyway. Got options for future, or running the split unit with no stat in (got most of it out, just not the ring hogging the crevice for a tight fight with a new stat). Radiator was from Premier Factors on Ebay cost 69 pounds + 59 pounds shipping. I've heard many cautionary tales about chinese rads leaking, so made sure there's a warranty. Sadly just realised that i have to pay for it to be shipped there and back to be repaired if it breaks, might as well just pay the 10 pound more to get another one . Radiators new here where 500+
It only takes a few minutes in the Alfa to forget the money or the time holed up in the garage and just sit with a big grin revving it away.
