before it lands in the general classifieds, i wanted you lot to have heads up on it.
Ive got my hands on Colin Wings former Class C Alfasud race car, which is a series 2 booted shell, (available shortly!) and it had an engine hanging in there which has been pretty much ignored, very likely because there doesn't look like there has been any timing belts fitted to it for quite some time, so we can all guess what the assumption was!
however, i've pulled the motor out, and stripped it right down for inspection, and it appears that the fears were unfounded!
thankfully, there was plenty of oil still inside, and still loads up and around the top end too, and the crank would rock back and forth from the pulley nut without me leaning on it too much, so i was hopeful from the start, and thankfully it has all come apart very well indeed.
the numbers on it show it is a 30128 motor, so a 1500Ti Twin Carb 95bhp motor, which at the time of the series 2's was probably the best motor available i suspect, which makes sense for a track/race car run by Alfa Services Northampton doesn't it!
and it looks like it has stayed pretty much original, it's hard for me to tell without having the cam profiles examined and valve sizes scrutineered, which i may do at some point, but essentially, think of it for now as a likely good 1.5 Ti motor to be on the safe side.
starting from the top end, the twin lobe cams are perfect, no marks or issues there at all, tappets, buckets etc etc are all present and correct, and the valves which i have left complete in the heads for now, are all moveable smoothly by hand and passed my own little leak test 100%
Pistons were stubborn to begin with but, just dried grime in the rings and bores, but have all come out without drama, and will be cleaned up anytime now for inspection, as will the bores themselves which so far look like a clean up is all that will be required, by hand, no machining required, no scars or bore wear evident that i have seen yet.
Bore sizes look stock 84mm according to my cheap verniers, but i'll know more once i get the pistons cleaned properly.
Crank is a similar tale to the cams, because of the oil still present, there was still a good smear inside the shells and bearings etc, and it all came apart and looks tickety boo!
I will continue to clean these parts up and prepare them for a rebuild, but my intention was to prove or disprove that this was still a useable motor, and i think i've done that already, so i believe this engine will rebuild and refresh perfectly, and so is up for grabs.
I'll sell it as cheaply as reasonably possible for a motor in parts and boxes, but at least this way the gamble factor isn't there like buying a 30year old engine from under a bench with the typical ebay guarantee of "this motor was running fine before removed from the car"! ha ha!
Alternatively, i will include this motor as spares to be included with my BLS Ti motor also currently for sale as a great running unit, for the right deal!
If anyone fancies it, give me a shout,
and if you want to know more about the motor itself historically, try and find Colin Wing! ha ha!!
all the best
