This is my 1985 1.5 Sprint I picked up 2 months ago. It's my first non japanese ****box and brings a big smile to my face every time i drive it.
Sadly it needs some rust work to stay on the road, in the drivers side pillar, boot, boot sill, and minor stuff in the drivers door sill + who knows where else.
I'm going to take it into a panel beaters and ask their advice on stuff i can do myself, and any advice on rust proofing alfas would be great. I have 0 experience doing rust work on cars, but will get a mate to help me who knows a bit. My plan is to use a small dremel with wire brush/ sanding bits to strip what i can, then paint with rust proofing stuff, primer, and paint. I know this is going to be ongoing, and really want to learn to do as much myself as possible.
Here are some pics of the rust
This is the boot sill (I'm not sure I can do all of this, or if it will need welding.)
Here's the bit of the drivers door sill i'm pretty sure I'll be able to do myself
And the bit I wont be able to do myself
The gear changes especially into second where pretty slow (second required waiting a beat before popping it in, but when i had the car serviced they replaced the oil in the gearbox and it is better (but not great). I actually have another gear box for it, but It's no where near bad enough to bother a costly repair that might not improve things.
The service cost me $650 and included a new water pump (was rumbling), gear box oil, swapping over 1 wheel i had (old one dented), Engine flush, antifreeze + 'full service', whatever that includes. Any Aucklanders reckon this is a good deal or not?
Other things I'm doing to it:
Building custom valve pre amp head deck + amp under seat + 6ohm bookshelves in the back so I can change the parcel shelf with speakers in it to the original leather boot cover, get rid of the ugly sony head deck and blast my tunes as they where meant to be blasted. More pics in future. Will be some nice stainless steel machining for the head deck with alfa logo cut in to display glowing valve. Will maybe sell these if the prototype goes well & anyone is interested.
Replacing door handle which freind broke (works fine now, but now door wont unlock (much fun to be had with doors in the near future).
Stripped the messed up leather off steering wheel now to wrap with fizi'k bike tape, had a bit lying round and it feels mint on the wheel. What color? Rest of the interior is pretty original.
Any advice for a new alfa owner would be great. In future I'd like to tune the carbs, try to improve the torque steer, find a roof rack so I can take it skiing/ surfing (all cars look better with a roof rack) and maybe lower it a bit.
