I'm feeling happy about sud ownership again! For years I have been meaning to go to the Auto Italia Show in Canberra- our nation's capital (as all the local car licence plates inform me)
I was going to take my Fiat Coupe but unfortunately it still has problems with its viscodrive unit (a legacy of a previous unsuccessful trip to Bathurst for a national Fiat meeting)
So the choices were a) don't go or b) take the sud
Being more than occasionally masochistic when it comes to Italian Cars I decided to take option 'b'
So I checked the tyre pressures and fluid levels, filled it with fuel and drove off towards Canberra. There are of course two ways to get there, a)the easy (boring) way via the Hume highway- about 700km or b)the interesting (long) way via the Monaro highway- adding an extra 50km or so. As (b) worked for the first question I decided to go the long way in true Italian car fashion.
Headed off on Friday afternoon, stayed the night at beautiful Lakes Entrance and arrived in Canberra on Saturday afternoon. Luckily this time I had bought a street directory as Canberra is possibly the world's most obscure road system- i'm sure that it is part of an anti terrorism program to prevent any potential wrongdoers from actually finding any appropriate place to do it.
Had an enjoyable meal with some of the NSW and ACT club members on the Saturday night and up early to find a shady spot for the day. It was an excellent location (once found) along the lake although the extremely close proximity to large amounts water may have caused durability concerns when displaying their cars...
An absolutely brilliant day- I don't know the exact numbers but I would guess that there had to be at least 200 cars and a large selection of Italian Bikes and scooters- pretty well all italian makes were represented from Vespa through to Ferrari, Maserati and Ducati!
Congratulations are due to the organisers for such a brilliant event- coincidentally timed with a Ulyssees motorcycle club convention with over 4500 members in town! (most of which seemed to be staying at my hotel!)
Saw my all time dream car again- a Giulia SS- I think it is time to quit the Fiat and start saving hard!
The sud did fine too- total of 1556 km at an average of 13.5km/l (about 38mpg) and did the return trip of 719km in 8hrs 5min including fuel stop for car and driver.
Didn't get passed by much and hopefully didn't get any expensive photos taken by the long arm of the law, had a fantastic drive through to Cann River- including a demonstration to the owner of a BMW 7 series that his ultimate driving machine wasn't tangibly superior to a 22yr old Italian Hatcback (after we overtook each other twice he decided to return to appropriate chauffeur velocities) and overtaking a couple of perambulating old Lamborghinis!

Overall a great weekend- what more could you want?
