Yes you are making sense, and you are right; the speedo drive has to come out first. Then you can undo the four cap screws and withdraw the halfshaft assembly.
The outer halfshaft bearing is retained by a threaded collar which is pressed onto the shaft from the inside. You need a special tool and a hefty press to do the job.
I had also heard that the halfshaft seals were no longer available, so it might be worth making sure you have all the bits before you go too far.
I wonder why the problem always seems to be on the right hand side? I've had two different gearboxes with the same problem, and replacing the halfshaft assembly with one from a third gearbox is also far from perfect!
Is it something to do with the handbrake forcing the halfshafts or something? Perhaps I'm just jinxed???
