How noisy is "a racing exhaust"? If you have to talk loudly to be heard over it then there's something wrong with it. If it's a a humming noise that blends into the background then that's normal.
If it's grumbling loudly then it sounds like it wants to be changed, anyway, even if it's not causing the problem.
I'd check the crankcase breather - they get clagged up, so the engine is pumping against a closed oil system.
HT leads/caps is another - they break down over time - though they usually "go off" at high rpm, rather than idle.
Is your ship a late one (1993?) with a catalyst jobbie? If so, you have the lambda sensor to investigate (possibly AFM too).
No bullets for Chaingun..
