Possible alternator problems? Low charge rate.

Hi guys,
Got a problem with the minari (1.5 alfasud engine). When the engine is running the battery is discharging, the charge rate sits at about 8-9 volts. Obviously this isn't great. Ive changed the alternator belt just incase it was that and its not made any difference.

Now before I go and change the alternator, are there any common points of failure I should be checking for? Dont want to waste time and money changing the alternator for it not to make any difference!

earthing issues are always worth checking. a simple test would be to clamp a jump lead between the neg on the battery and something metal and shiny on the engine, preferably something like the alternator bracket.
if you still have very low charge readings then your alternator is fried

yep a good healthy charging rate would be around 14 volts.

check the earthing - if that's ok then maybe just a refurbish/cleaning of the alternator is required. Maybe the carbon/brushes are worn.

There might be a problem with the alternator excitation supply as well.
The excitation voltage to the alternator is supplied through the "charging fault" indicator bulb.
If the bulb is dead or the excitation supply in broken somewhere else, the alternator won't be able
to charge below 4500-5000 RPM.
