nice tank lib
was looking at the picture wondering why your spare was in the wrong side then realised it is an alfetta
out this afternoon to get a bit more done, slow but steady progress.
started off making the repair patch for the drivers side inner bulkhead area.
the welded in from many angles
pic 3 is my useful new tool, a metal folder. make slovely crisp bends without needing to get the hammer going
not always important to get the patches to fit perfectly all around when filling in the gaps, get the basic shape then do like this...
pic 4 start with one edge and tack weld it every so often, both ends and one in the middle is enough for this plate about 4" long. don't worry about the bottom edge not sitting in the curve where the speedo cable used to be, easier to shape when it starts getting firmer.
pic 5 shows the top edge welded all along, seam welded. this is easier when you have tacked the plate as in the pic 4 to prevent it pulling away when you go along, as it would if you just started welding from one end and went along.
now it's firmly in place a few hammer blows helps it create the shape of the other side and can then again be tacked into place.
pic 6 welded all around, simple as that.
