feel free to reminisce guys, love the old stories from back when you could get away with these things
guess everyone was the same back then. capri's, mk 1 & 2 escorts, corolla's, mk1 astra gte, even an alfa 33 for my mate paul. we got through a few cars back then. my first italian car was a delta 1.5 with the single cam fiat engine in, still revved like a good 'un though, all the way to the redline without feeling like you were wasting your time. never revved a car before to teh extent that the delta got
anyway, shame finally got the better of me today so i had a few hours down the shed.
finished painting a few bits, cam-belt housings etc. also painted the cam covers which although the high temperature paint insisted it being black it has come out more like charcoal or grey, a matt black at best. not as grey as the picture shows the front one, that's the camera flash, but more like the back one hung up. do quite like it though
waiting for some more core plugs for the block as the ones that arrived weren't quite right. went in well enough but too well, ordered some .5mm bigger. don't want the oilway to suddenly become fully open to the outside world
so the job i really hate doing had to be tackled, lapping in the valves.
thought that doing one head at a time to break it up would be the way so did just that.
8 valves done, cleaned, new seasl fitted, springs sorted the right way round
, and fitted.
getting the collets fitted was a bit fiddly as they are deep down. tried allsorts to make the job easier, thin screwdrivers and artist paint-brush handles etc then tried with long nosed pliers. sort of got them done then thought that some thinner needle nosed pliers with a crank in them would be more useful.
then it occured to me, i have just the thing. so into the fishing box and hey presto, perfect for the job. thin, serated teeth to grip the collet and just the right 30 degree or so of crank so you can still see what you're doing
down to the local tackle shop for anyone with this job to do, far cheaper than snap-on ones
