Related to cylinder head removal...
Hi guys - I've got the Green Machine through its MoT (hooray!), but in the process of the 10 mile round trip, discovered an engine oil leak which is getting progressively worse. It seems to be coming from the left hand cylinder bank, specifically at the joint between the cambox and the cylinder head. I think the gasket is failing, and allowing the oil to leak out. It may be under pressure if its one of the drillings taking oil to the camshaft bearing journals. The engine is allowing enough out to lightly spatter the driveshaft and wishbones in oil.
Now, as I understand it, the cylinder head bolts pass through the cambox into the head and then the cylinder block. So removing the cambox to change the gasket requires removal of the complete cylinder head. That's the official party line of course, but is this always the case? Is there a bodge that allows me to separate the cambox in the car without compromising the head gasket?
(I suspect not, but I thought I would ask anyway)
I'm reluctant to remove the engine at this time as I am going to change the engine within the next few months anyway. So the next question is, do I need to do anything about it in the short term, or can I just keep topping up the engine oil and use as-is? Ideally I would like to do the latter, so that I can shake all the bugs out of my new exhaust system and gear linkage etc.
Any advice gratefully received, as always,
