You can drive it but.... You might have to take corner quite mild because you dont want to "unload" weight of the axle otherwise the shock will go out of the socket. Fortunately , because it is inside the spring , it will not change place and do any damage for example on a wheel but there is a slight chance to bent .
In addition , since you will not have the shock attached to the axle , you will not have "rebount" function and on one side only the spring will work so not to safe.
I hade a similar condition when to nut of rear left shock got loose and finally went off and the damn think went off the socket. It took me more that week to realize it (that banging sound should be enough) but it was the behavior of the rear axle that could keep the car properly while cornering.....
