I recently bought a new old stock steel wheel for my series 1 ti from Italy, when it arrived all looked good until I compared it to the ones on my car, then I was puzzled..
According to the books & road tests of the period the ti models had 5.5j x 13" steel wheels, the one from italy is this size, good
When I compared it to the ones on the car I was puzzled to see 5j x 13" ??
As you can see from the photos stamped into the wheels is 5j x 13" dated 6/1975 but I cannot see anywhere that ti's had 5j wheels fitted, the very early non ti suds had 5j wheels fitted but they were a different pressing completely. puzzled, anyone know?? I favour the 5.5j wheel size as I want to fit a slightly wider tyre than the 165's that were originally fitted.
Yes I might still use the 5j wheels yet unless I can find 4 more rust free 5.5j's?!, looks like they changed sometime in the mid 70's then altough I have a brooklands road test reprint book and the ti's that were tested around 1976 were said to have 5.5j's?! just a mystery I guess
Anyway can anyone recommend what the best tyre size to use is, to keep it looking almost standard but moving up a bit from the skinny 165's and keeping the same rolling diameter? maybe a 185?
As far as i know the 1.2 s1 ti came with 5" wheels, the 5.5" where introduced in 77 for the 1.3 ti sud and sprints! The 1.2 ti came with 145/75 tyres as standard but had an optional extra for the 165/70.
and if your looking for originality its still possible to get the correct pirelli P3000 165/70/13 from most suppliers for £40 each!
my fav tyre for the s3 speedline is the yokohama A539 185/60/14
