So after about 3 weeks of making space in the garage, I finally collected my new Sud yesterday evening. Itís a nice genuine car with no obvious hidden problems.
Rust wise, its not too bad for a 1983 Irish car thatís never been restored, A couple of small patches are needed and the windscreen will need attention soon however, for the moment, the car is quite presentable.
The car seems to have been kept inside for most of its life. The last owner had it for twenty odd years and kept it in very good order. It was last taxed in 1999 and hadnít been started since 2003. Even still, an oil change and some fresh petrol and it sparked into life straight away
Iím hoping thatís a good omen for the future
I want to re commission it and have it legal before the end of the summer. Long term plans are to tidy the few bits and pieces that are needed on the body, lower it a little and maybe look at a 16v conversion as I have a spare sitting at the back of the garage. Thatís a good bit away yet though as I want to get to use it for a while before getting stuck into a restoration.
Anyway, I'll be documenting most of what I do to it here. Iíve decided that anything I do will be reversible in the event that I want to return it to showroom condition (unlikely but you never know).
Hopefully, I wont make a hash of it. I can already tell that it requires a more delicate touch than my usual approach with the 33
This will be a fairly slow burning project. Immediate plans are to give the engine a good going over and change the belts and pump. The brakes need to be overhauled too and Ive already done the clutch master and slave.
Iíll kick it off with a few pics:
