Speedo Drive Unit in Gearbox
My latest problem is that the speedometer has now decided to stop working! Investigation seems to point to the speedo-drive unit inside the gearbox; however I do have another gearbox from a 1500 ‘Sud in which the speedo-drive is working. My problem is that I cannot remove the drive from the old gearbox as it seems to be stuck fast, the Haynes manual suggests it should simply lift out, (LOL), it does not. I have spoken to one of the mechanics in work and he has suggested that two dissimilar metals have caused corrosion, and bonded themselves together, therefore I should use heat to allow the expansion and contraction to loosen the drive, but I must be careful to avoid melting the cog at the end of the drive. Then when the one from the spare gearbox is out I must remove the one from the gearbox installed in the car.
So does anybody have experience of removing and replacing the speedo-drive gear? If so can they please provide me with advice on this task?
