to 4x4 or not to 4x4?
Long time reader, first time poster, finally looking to become a member of 'the club'. My old man used to have a GT 1600 Junior, so i guess that gave me the alfa bug.
In any case, the reason I'm finally making myself known on here is that I've seen a very clean 4x4 wagon come up for sale, and i want to ask a few questions. It's a 1.5 twin weber engine, and the body is supposed to be totally rust free (unheard of here in aus), and the interior immaculate. It's going for 3900 AUD (good 33's usually go for anywhere between 3000 and 8000 depending on age and model)
My biggest concern is the selectable 4wd system (i'm told it's the same system as the old subaru 1800 wagons, which have a reputation for crappiness over here) so i'm worried about the centre/rear diffs or the transmission packing it in, and me being left with an alfa that won't go anywhere, and that replacement parts can't be had for.
Obviously i'm also a bit bothered by the fact that it's a damn wagon, and therefore not very stylish, but given i can probably make good use of the extra space, being a musician and all, it'll be useful.
The final concern is that it's a 1.5 donk rather than the 1.7 i would have preferred. I'm not averse to getting myself greasy to get more power out of my cars (i've done it a lot before), but it's already got a twin weber setup, so with the exception of putting in an exhaust, there's not much more power to be had out of the engine...
Thoughts? Should I hold off for a 1.7L saloon in the condition I'm hoping for? Do I have anything to worry about with regard to the 4wd system sucking arse? Do I take the advice of random weirdos on the internet too seriously? Should I hang it all and buy something even more boring and practical, like another damn toyota?
