Thanks for all the input - first thing I did when I bought the car was change the gearbox oil, using the handbook recommended hypoid mineral oil.
Since the car came to me very cheap, I will give the synthetic and Slik 50 a shot to see if that improves things much. I have used Redline oils for noisy diffs and boxes with great success in the past, but at £15 a pint it's a bit of an expensive gamble. If that fails I'll go for a second hand box and take my chances.
Meantime, I've at least improved my gear changing...cannot say that I am mastering it yet, but certainly getting better.
Having had the car a month or two now I've had a few chances to give it a sound thrashing and the harder I drive it the more I like it.
The induction/exhaust tone on this bog standard car is to die for...perhaps I've led a sheltered life until now. The understeer and lock, whilst taking a little bit of getting used to, are quite heavenly to drive with. This is a car that will encourage me to get into trouble....thankfully mine is not injected/16 valve version or I'd be out of my depth.
Thanks again for all responses - nice site with nice folks.
